Trestleboard Messages for October 2002

From the East

Brethren:
Longevity and change are two concepts that are synonymous to Freemasonry. The practice of the Masonic Ideals in our constantly changing world have served as the backdrop for centuries of service to society.
Two events seem to come to my mind when I think of these two precepts. One is already in the past and the other is in the future.
I have had an opportunity to represent California Grand Lodge in a very unique event. A Brother Mason from Nebraska was celebrating his 100th birthday. The 64 years of service to Masonry and life spanning hundred years has only reinforced his belief in the goodness that our organization offers to the outside world. Behind the stories stood a man who was proud of his Masonic heritage.
The Brother was asked if he has seen a change in his life of hundred years. He said, "Yes and No." As he enumerated things familiar to most of us, I realized that some things have changed and yet other endured a century. In a way, careful change is a requirement for longevity.
Masonry needs that careful examination where the mix of the change and longevity strike a balance.
In mid-October our lodge will be making our annual journey to San Francisco. This is when the Brethren throughout California come together to decide on specific resolutions proposed and in a way decide on the future of the Fraternity.
As we ponder upon these resolutions, we must keep the concept of longevity and change in mind. We can not survive if we do not change, but we must be careful that the change we are introducing does not affect our longevity. The change must endure the test of time.

Fraternally, Edward

From the West

Hello Brethren!:
Last month we had our Annual Constitution Observance Event. Despite a poor turnout, we managed to still have a decent event. Featured speakers were Burbank Mayor David Laurell, Burbank Police Chief Thomas Hoefel, School Board President Richard Raad and State Senator Jack Scott. All four were given a few moments to discuss the different aspects of the Constitution and how it relates to their office or position. Other participants were Assembly member Dario Frommer's office, who donated copies of the US Constitution and LC Kelley Chapter Order of De Molay who led the flag salute. A special thanks to Brother Edward Headington, for mentioning the event and the lodge in is bi-weekly Burbank Leader article. At the close of the evening, all were treated to refreshments courtesy of Brother Jason Cunningham.
In October, several of the officers will be heading to San Francisco for Grand Lodge. Thank you to all the Brethren for the opportunity to attend this yearly event.
Attention Past Masters! Past Masters night will be on October 24th. Contact Worshipful Bill Cunningham for details. I know he is looking for a little participation from some of you, so if you can help give him a call.
Hope to see you all out at Lodge this and every month!
Fraternally, Greg

From the South

Brethren:
Well, I am sure most of you will be pleased to see that my picture is finally posted in with this article, it's been a long time coming and I hope it lives up to your expectations.
Anyway, October brings not only a new month to the Lodge but also some good events. Stated meeting, as usual, will be held on Thursday, October 3rd.
For those of you that are not usually in attendance for our Stated Meetings, you missed a great one in September. It was good to hear the various opinions on sensitive issues from the Brethren.
October 24th will be the annual Past Masters Night at the Lodge. Social hour will begin at 5:30 PM and dinner will follow promptly at 6:00 PM (tradition informs me that Steak dinner is the main dish, so look forward to a good meal). At 6:30 PM our Past Masters will then perform 3rd Degree to raise Brother Kyle Fethke to Master Mason.
Please contact the Lodge to make a reservation. Master Masons only.
Fraternally, Jason

For the Ladies, from the First Lady of 406

From Elizabeth Avetisian:
All of us who attended the craft evening in September had a wonderful time. We all learned something new and each took home a beautiful wreath to display at our homes. I sincere thank all the Ladies who participated and especially Judy Barnes who put it all together. Another craft evening is planned in November by popular demand from our Ladies. This one will be centered around the fall season. Judy Barnes once again will organize this event. I will have the details in the November article.
In October we offer a special cake decorating evening. I've invited the pastry chef and owner of French Bakery in Glendale to demonstrate some basic cake decorating techniques for us. He will be bringing few unfinished cakes from his own bakery to decorate. Please join us at this informative and pleasant evening. At the end of the evening we will have tea with sampling of the cakes. Please bring your favorite teacup. The event is on Thursday, October 3rd at 8:00pm., social hour between 7:00 and 8:00pm. I hope to see you there.

Sincerely,
Elizabeth
