Trestleboard Messages for June 2003

From the East

Brethren:
So far so good!? I am pleased with our progress thus far through the sixth month of the year.
I have been fortunate not only to have a growing list of candidates, but also dedicated officers and enthusiastic sideliners.
I have said it before; Burbank 406 is growing! With our current candidate pool, we should be busy through December. If you know any men you think would make a good Mason, bring him to one of our dinners or social hour. In fact, Fellowship Fridays would be perfect for this very thing.
I have been very lucky thus far to have a dedicated officers line. I know I ask a lot of their time, and I appreciate their hard work. I know how hard it has been for me over the last few years as I have moved through the line to balance work, family, fun and lodge. I recognize all of your sacrifices.
I have also been very pleased with our members and sideliners who make it out to the various degrees and events. The lodge asks for your Thursday Nights and many of you give them regularly. It means a lot to myself, and to all the officers, more importantly though it means a great deal to our candidates.
Although it has already been mentioned in this issue of the Trestleboard, thank you to those Brethren who have stepped up and helped with the Child ID Program over the last few months.
Fraternally, Greg

From the West

Brethren!
I would like to start my article by thanking the Brethren for keeping their “cool” during Lodge and the subsequent meetings while discussing the Lodge property on Glenoaks & Olive Avenue. As I stated in last month’s article, I know that this is a sensitive subject for all of us. We are, however, a Fraternity based on Brotherly Love, so please remember that whatever decision is made, it will be for the best intentions for the future of our Lodge. We need not only think about the immediate future of Burbank 406 but also about the next 90+ years down the line. We are a strong Lodge in California and the officers and committees established for the property are focused on maintaining our integrity. We as a Lodge owe Worshipful Edward Avetisian a hearty thanks for all the hard work he has put in heading up the committee. The presentations he made both during the special meeting and during Lodge were outstanding.
On a lighter note, Burbank Fire/Police Day which was held on Saturday, May 10th was a great success for the Child ID program. This was the first event that I was able to participate in and I must say that it was great! The last count of IDs was somewhere around 300. I think we could have done more but the printer we used took a bit longer than anticipated to spew out all the information. My thanks go out to W.M. Greg Bragg, Bros. Steve Harris, Harold Jordan, C. Mark Steiger, Sterling Lockett, and Steve Gagliano for their all their help. I look forward to doing the Child ID program in the months to come. If any of you has a special interest where you might think this service to the commuinity might be used, please contact me.
As summer approaches and the first half of the year comes to a conclusion, I would like to wish all of the best on any vacations that are planned for yourselves and families. I look forward to seeing all of you in Lodge, have a great month.
Fraternally, Jason

From the South

Brethren:
Summer is nearly here. It is a time for summer vacations, Bar-B-Que’s, trips to the beach. It also means we are approaching the halfway point in this Masonic year. I for one have been having a great time. It is always enjoyable, going to events and visiting with all our Brothers and their families. As your summer schedule starts to come together, don’t forget to leave some time to visit your Brethren and friends in Burbank 406 and all the groups here at the Burbank Masonic Center.
Our Annual Trout Fry, Inspectors visit, and Burbank-Glendale Shrine Club visit (I got it right this time) went extremely well. I have received only compliments from those in attendance. And for the record, Worshipful Bill Cunningham handled the cooking duties for the trout. I say this because almost everyone who had the fish asked me who cooked it because it was sooo.. good. Congratulations and Thank You Worshipful Cunningham. I also must mention that my usual cast of characters came through in helping put together another great night.
Congratulations to Bro. Kabanjian, our newest Master Mason. As always we had a great night, and my thanks to all the Brothers who made reservations for the dinner. We have been pretty successful with the reservations this year. Thank you to all. Please remember to call us at least 1 day prior to the dinner so we have time to make any additions to menu to make sure everyone is accommodated.
Fraternally, Tim

From the Secretary's Desk

I thank the Brethren who have paid their dues recently.
Remember, dues were due January First!

Now, here is a story for you to enjoy.

The Wise Woman's Stone.

A wise woman who was traveling in the mountains found a precious stone in a stream. The next day she met a traveler who was hungry, and the wise woman opened her bag to share her food. The hungry traveler saw the precious stone and asked the woman to give the stone to him. She did so without hesitation. The traveler left, rejoicing in his good fortune. He knew the stone was worth enough to give him security for a lifetime.
But, a few days later he came back to return the stone to the wise woman. “I've been thinking,” he said, “I know how valuable the stone is, but I give it back in the hope that you can give me something even more precious. Give me what you have within you that enabled you to give me the stone."
She said, “You must be the change you wish to see in the world.” Some people are unreasonable, illogical and self- centered. Love them anyway!
If you do good people will accuse you of selfish ulterior motives. Do Good anyway!
If you are successful you will win false friends and true enemies. Succeed anyway!
The good you do today will be forgotten tomorrow. Do good anyway!
Honesty and frankness make you vulnerable. Be honest and frank anyway.
The biggest person with the biggest ideas can be shot down by the smallest person with the smallest mind. Think big anyway!
What you spend years building may be destroyed overnight Build anyway!
People really need help but may attack you if you help them. Help people anyway!
Give the world the best you have and you might get kicked in the teeth. Give the world the best you've got anyway!

Fraternally, Norm Furman, Secretary
