Trestleboard Messages for July 2003

From the East

Brethren:
With this Trestleboard we are combining the months of July & August, so pay close attention to the calendar of events.
This month a family dinner beginning at 6:00 PM will precede our Stated Meeting. All are welcome to attend and reservations are a big help.
We are trying a new event this month called "Movie Night". Thursday July 10th all are welcome to join us in the men's lounge to enjoy a movie. The evening will begin at 7:00 PM with light snacks followed by the movie "Hunt for Red October", complete with popcorn.
The degrees scheduled for the month of July are a Master Mason Degree on the 24th and a Fellowcraft Degree on the 31st. As usual, the Master Mason Degree will include a steak dinner prior to the degree. Remember that only Master Masons are invited to attend the third degree dinners.
The month of August will be our dark month. Prior to the Stated Meeting for the month of August is our Family Summer BBQ at McCambridge Park. The only other scheduled event is a Movie Night on the 21st. There will not be any Fellowship Fridays or Degrees this month.
Have a happy and safe Fourth!
Fraternally, Greg

From the West

Brethren!
The past few months have been focused on the future of Burbank Lodge #406. The main issue continues to be the decision on the property on Glenoaks Blvd. & Olive Ave. As I have stated in past articles, this is a very sensitive issue with Brothers on both sides of the Lodge. It was hard to believe that we had a turnout of only 30 Masons (including the officers) from Burbank Lodge for the June stated meeting. That meeting was perhaps the most important night for Burbank Lodge in a very long time.
We all had our chance to voice our opinions and concerns, and, whether or not we agreed with all of them, we came to a conclusion. Personally, I was proud to be a part of the decision with a significant piece of Burbank Lodge's history and future.
Hopefully, we will see more of you in Lodge during the months to come.
July brings about and important holiday for our country. Celebrating our independence is an essential way to support the country we live in. During a time when our forces are trying to maintain the freedoms we enjoy, please take a few minutes of your day to reflect on what it means to you as an individual to be an American. Be safe with parties and events you may be a part of.
The Child ID program is still in full force with Burbank Lodge. While a great service is being given to the community, we are also making a strong presence with the Lodge. The Child ID program is something I am really enjoying as Senior Warden and I want to thank all of you who are helping the program to build in Burbank Lodge. Once again, if any of you might know where we can provide the Child ID program, please feel free to contact the Lodge.
      Have a great Month!
Fraternally, Jason

From the South

Brethren:
I am writing this article as I sit in my living room watching my daughter, Megan. She is doing as so many kids do, making a mess with watercolors. While she is discovering all the different colors, creating masterpieces of art, and putting every ounce of creativity into each one, I can't help but think about the future. I realize that there is only one absolute about the future, that is "we don't know what it holds". We can only try our best to live our lives in such a fashion as to give ourselves the best opportunities to make the right decisions.
I share this thought with you as I think back to the decisions our Lodge made this last month. It is safe to say that the June stated meeting was one of the most important stated meetings this Lodge has held in some time. I am very appreciative of all the hard work so many people have put in over the last few years. As a Brother of this Lodge, I did not always agree with all my Brethren and their views on what to do with our property at Glenoaks Blvd. and Olive Ave, and how that decision would affect our future. However, I realized that none of us could possible know how the future of Burbank Lodge is going to unfold and that all each of us wants is to endeavor to help the Lodge exist with every opportunity to survive and prosper. This particular goal is one that exists in each of us as Brethren of Burbank Lodge and is one of the many ties that bind each of us together. So. I say to all the Brethren, the decision is made. Now lets focus on our continuing challenge, that of trying to guide Burbank Lodge to a Prosperous and Bright future.
I will include one last thought. We have several more dinners coming up this year and I look forward to seeing all the Brethren at each dinner. Please check the calendar on the front of your Trestleboard, and give the Secretary a call to leave your reservation. The number is (818) 848-3750.
Fraternally, Tim

From the Secretary's Desk

I thank the Brethren who have paid their dues recently.
Brother Nat Hillyer who is a retired Pacific Bell employee, has a program that may be of interest and of help to the Brethren, Widows, relatives and friends and it is FREE to California residents.
Brother Nat is involved with "Help Yourself, a Friend, or a Family Member" a California Telephone Access Program (CTAP) a program sponsored by the California Public Utilities Commission. This program will provide telephone equipment to help people who have difficulty hearing, seeing, moving, remembering or speaking. Specialized phones and devices have been developed to "turn up the volume, making dialing or entering a number easier, allow hands-free operation, flash incoming calls, display conversation in text and remember numbers." All California phone users pay into a trust fund that pays for this program and appears on your phone bill as "CA Relay Service and Communications Devices Fund."
Should any Brother, Widow, relative or friend have any questions and desire help, contact Nat Hillyer at Email NHILLYER00@AOL.COM or phone Nat at 818-848- 0212. You may also call direct at 800-806-1191.
