Trestleboard Messages for March 2004

From the East

Brethren & Ladies,
Brethren, As we move into the month of March, the Lodge has no time to rest. Not only are there degrees to perform, but there is also the issue with the property on Glenoaks. There are some important decisions to be made this month that will affect us all in the years to come. Most of you know by now that we have been working very diligently to find another property to sustain the income needs we need to move into the next decade if we decide to sell/ exchange the property. We are making headway and I want you all to feel comfortable knowing that those in charge of finding a property and making those vital decisions are keeping you all in mind, as well as the integrity of our Lodge. Please contact me if you have any questions or concerns and I will do my best address them as well as I can.
I would like to thank our Junior Warden and his family for hosting a wonderful Sweethearts Dinner. The food was great and I know you all put a lot of hard work into it. You are setting the standard for the dinners to come.
Next, I would like to congratulate all the Brethren who were obligated, passed, and raised. You are a great group of men and I look forward to getting to know you all better in the months and years to come. Masonry has a special place in my heart and I hope it will bring you the same joy and satisfaction. Burbank Lodge is a great place to meet new people and establish life long friendships.
We lost a dear friend, brother, and supporter of our Lodge last month—Wor. Curt Lorenz, P. M. Wor. Curt was an example to all of us as to what a Mason should be. His presence will be missed, but his legacy as a brother of this Lodge will never fade. Please keep his family in your hearts and prayers.

Fraternally,
Jason W. Cunningham

From the West

Brethren!
Hello from the West! Here we are in March and the momentum has not let up. We are just as busy with degrees as ever. If you have been wanting attend a degree, just check your calendar on the front of the Trestleboard as there is probably one coming up soon.
Significant strides have been made in the area of our property at Glenoaks and Olive. I encourage every Master Mason to attend the stated meetings to hear all the news and to keep yourselves up to date. Stated meetings are also your opportunity to have your voice heard in the most effective and constructive way.
I am sorry to say I was not able to attend our annual Sweethearts Night. Every person I have spoken to, however, said it was a fabulous evening. My congratulations to all involved especially our Junior Warden.
This year is moving very quickly. Take a moment to come by and visit us. We would love to see you!

Fraternally,
Timothy J. Halm

From the South

Brethren:
Brethren, As the month of March is now upon us, I would like to wish every- body a warm Irish Greeting. I hope that your St. Patrick's Day is filled with plenty of corned beef, cabbage and Irish cheer. Yes I said Irish cheer!
Congratulations to Worshipful Jason Cunningham last month on his first presiding evening in the East. You looked like a natural and did a great job! I would like to thank everybody who supported last month's culinary events; especially the Sweethearts Dinner. Widows and Ladies are such an asset to Burbank Lodge, and it was truly a pleasure to honor you all. We had a wonderful event, all thanks to my wonderful helpers that make my job so easy. You all know who you are, and thanks for your constant support and hard work.
This month is a slow one as far as the kitchen duties go. The only kitchen creation for this month will be a 3rd Degree Master Masons dinner on the 25th. The main course for the evening has not yet been decided because it will be up to the candidate to tell us what he wants for dinner on the night that he is raised to the Sublime Degree of Master Mason.
Lets all support him by attending this special evening. Reservations are mandatory and must be made to the Secretary no later than Monday, March 22. Seating is limited so be sure to make your reser- vations sooner than later! Lets be sure to show equal support to the 1st Degree Candidates on the 11th.
Even though there in no dinner preceding this event, there will be a decadent dessert to follow! I am really enjoying all of my Junior Wardens responsibilities, es- pecially in the kitchen. I appreciate all of the support and suggestions and please keep them coming. I en- courage all Masons to join us for food and fellowship one hour prior to every stated meeting also. Always remember that you will get as much out of Masonry as what you put into it! "Only Irish Coffee provides in a single glass all four essential food groups: alcohol, caffeine, sugar and fat." (Alex Levine).

Fraternally,
Kenneth L. Barnes

From the Secretary's Desk

Brethren:
Brethren, Over the years, you have heard many good reasons to make your gift to the Masonic Homes of California or the California Masonic Foundation. At a time when we had 150,000 Masons in this jurisdiction, a $10 or $20 gift was all it took to keep these organizations healthy. Times have changed. Simply put, fewer of us need to do more.
Healthcare costs have risen dramatically over the years. Our brothers, wives and widows are now living longer, and requiring more expensive types of care. The Homes is doing our work for us. They need our support!
The Foundation is increasing its focus on supporting our teachers in the public schools. We believe we make a difference with our Masonic Student Assistance Program. Just ask a child whose life has improved because of it.
We now have a new Alzheimer's Unit in Union City to support those vulnerable members of our family who suffer from dementia. Who knows what the next important advance in care will be. Our brothers, wives and widows deserve the best care available. What would we want for our brothers and widows ofBurbank Lodge in need?
Please make your gift soon. We all need to do our part. Ask Norm Furman, Secretary for a pledge card, and make a gift that represents your own ability and your concern for our programs and their future.

Fraternally,
Norman A. Furman, Secretary

A word from the Webm@ster

Brethren:
OPERATION PHONE HOME

Operation Phone Home is a campaign designed with the goal of providing prepaid international phone calling cards to as many military men and women serving overseas as can be reached. It will be an ongoing effort as long as American Military Personnel serve overseas, particularly in Iraq, Afghanistan, and the Balkans.
The Masonic Service Association, on behalf of the Masonic fraternity, has entered into an agreement with the USO to participate in this program. MSA has met all of the requirements necessary to have a web site presence and a link to the USO web page and to have a Masonic Logo on the phone card. The card will include the logo of the USO, the participating phone company (AT&T), and the American Flag. On the left side of the card will appear the Square and Compasses and the words Compliments of America's Freemasons.
(Image below)
Anyone wishing to participate in this program may send a donation marked Operation Phone Home to:
                              The Masonic Service Association
                              8120 Fenton Street
                              Silver Spring, MD 20910-4785.
All of the monies received will go to this program and an accounting will be made by MSA at the end of each calendar year.
Or go to http://freemasonry.org and follow the links.
Thank you very much for your help!

I hope that you like the new design of this page.
Also new this month is a page that our Scottish Brothers should appreciate. It explains the origination of the official United States “National Tartan Day”. A click on the link will take you to it.
