Trestleboard Messages for April 2004

From the East

Brethren & Ladies,
Last month Burbank Lodge held one of the most important meetings that I have been a part of during my tenure as a Mason. I must tell you that I am now fully aware as to why the Past Masters of this Lodge refer to the Master's chair as the "hot seat." The main topic of discussion was, once again, our property on Glenoaks. Everyone had an opportunity to voice their concerns and opinions, and I feel the decision we made as a group, will continue to move us forward and help the Lodge grow. I would like to thank all of those who attended the meeting for, more or less, keeping your "cool." As I have expressed to you all in the past months, every Stated Meeting is important, and I urge each one of you to attend. Going forward, if you have a concern or issue with how things are done in the Lodge, please come to me or one of the Lodge officers first, and we will do the best we can to resolve any situation.
The month of April is a busy month for all of us. Not only is it tax time, but we also have several events both within the Lodge and in the community. Our Annual Public Schools Night will be held on April 22nd, which our Senior Deacon, Marc Canterbury, has put a lot of effort into — be sure to check the Calendar of Events for the correct time. Also, on Saturday the 24th, the officers will be marching in Burbank on Parade, which has been and will continue to be an excellent way for us to show our support for the community, and to gain exposure in the public eye. This event was almost canceled due to budget cuts, etc., but the city apparently managed to squeeze out a few dollars in order keep it going. If you would like to join the officers marching in the parade, please contact the Lodge.
In the months ahead, the Lodge will be pretty active with events. I am trying to plan a Dodger Night and Angels Night, where we can venture out and have a fun and exciting evening of fellowship at the ballpark. I know many of you, like myself, are local sports fans, so if you have any contact with the organizations, I would love to speak with you. We are also planning a joint venture with the Burbank Glendale Shrine Club to have a picnic/concert outing at the Hollywood Bowl. As you know these events do take some planning, so if you would like to help in any way, please give me a call. There will be sign-up sheets in the Norm's office for the degree trip and also for the games. Please check the office for more details. Lastly, congratulations to our recently raised Master Mason, Brother Jeff Yates, and initiated Entered Apprentice Masons, Brothers Shant Hagop Muradian, Rogelio Roy Lozano, and Nathan Robert Canterbury, you are great additions to the Lodge, thank you for choosing Burbank Lodge.
      Happy Easter and Passover!
Have a great month; I look forward to seeing you all.
      Fraternally,
      Jason

From the West

Brethren!
Welcome to Spring, a time of new beginnings and fresh starts. For Burbank Lodge, this spring signals a very significant new beginning. The sale of the Olive and Glenoaks property has been a very difficult and time consuming issue over the past couple of years, taking many Stated Meetings well into the later hours filled with passionate, and often very spirited discussions. However, one thing always remained, and that is our tie that binds us all together, our Brotherhood as Masons.
We now have an opportunity focus on doing more of the fun stuff that comes with our membership in a Masonic organization. I look forward to more degrees, movie nights, and just spending time with my Brothers and their families. I had to miss a good part of March due to work. This only served to make me realize, once again, how much I love being in Burbank Lodge and with all the people in it. I encourage you all to watch the Calendar and plan on attending some of the events your Worshipful Master has planned. As many of you are doing that spring cleaning, revisiting old magazines or uncovering that letter you forgot was on the desk which you're clearing for the first time in 5 months, think about how nice it might be to visit your friends here in Lodge. Even if you can't stay for a meeting, just stop by for the fellowship. Bring that family picture you just found in the cushions of the sofa and share the story with your Bothers and Friends. We would love see ya!
      Fraternally,
      Tim

From the South

Brethren:
As the month of April is now upon us, I would like to wish everybody a Happy Easter and Passover. Also, don't forget to "spring forward" on April 4, and set your clocks ahead one hour. Our Lodge had a successful month in March and I commend every member who attended the important Stated Meeting. "Good Job" to Brother Herb Rohwer Jr, who not only was presented with the C. Mark Steiger Award at the March stated meeting, but he was also installed as our Senior Steward. Thanks for your hard work and dedication! I take pleasure in congratulating all of the candidates who received degrees last month. I was very excited about one candidate specifically, our newest Entered Apprentice Brother Nathan Canterbury. Not only do I have the pleasure of him being my cousin, but he is the also the newest part in yet another Burbank Masonic Lodge Father/Son Duo. His proud Father is our Senior Deacon, Brother Marc Canterbury.
I look forward to a busy and exciting Month in April. Unfortunately there are no dinners scheduled this month for me to prepare, but as you can see on the Calendar, there is plenty to keep us busy. As always, I encourage every member to frequent lodge as often as possible. There is always Social Hour prior to every Stated Meeting and scheduled degree. You can also count on something to satisfy your sweet tooth when the events are over. In closing, please keep in mind the annual Trout Fry at the stated meeting next month on May 6. Ladies are welcome and I hope to see everybody there. Most importantly, please be sure to reserve your seat by Monday, May 3!
"The poor man is not he who is without a cent, but he who is without a dream." (Harry Kemp)
      Fraternally,
      Kenneth L. Barnes

FREEMASONRY
THE FOUNDATION FOR THE THIRD MILLENNIUM

Operation Phone Home is a campaign designed with the goal of providing prepaid international phone calling cards to as many military men and women serving overseas as can be reached. It will be an ongoing effort as long as American Military Personnel serve overseas, particularly in Iraq, Afghanistan, and the Balkans.
The Masonic Service Association, on behalf of the Masonic fraternity, has entered into an agreement with the USO to participate in this program. MSA has met all of the requirements necessary to have a web site presence and a link to the USO web page and to have a Masonic Logo on the phone card. The card will include the logo of the USO, the participating phone company (AT&T), and the American Flag. On the left side of the card will appear the Square and Compasses and the words Compliments of America's Freemasons.
(Image below)
Anyone wishing to participate in this program may send a donation marked Operation Phone Home to:
                              The Masonic Service Association
                              8120 Fenton Street
                              Silver Spring, MD 20910-4785.
All of the monies received will go to this program and an accounting will be made by MSA at the end of each calendar year.
Or go to http://freemasonry.org and follow the links.

Thank you very much for your help!
