Brethren!
Is it May already? It seems like this year is just flying by. I hope everyone had a fabulous Easter Holiday. In April I had the opportunity to join many Senior Wardens from other lodges in California for a retreat. We shared ideas, experiences, and fellowship as we learned some proven ways to prepare for our years as Master of our lodge. I am pleased to say I came away from that retreat with some great relationships and even better ideas for our future.
We have quite a few events coming up this summer and I encourage all of you to join us. Many of these events are open to our Families and Friends, so bring them along. Worshipful Cunningham has put together movie nights, our Annual Summer BBQ, a Degree Trip, and our recent Dodger Night with the City of Burbank. Let's go out and have some Fun!
As we look to the future of Burbank Lodge I realize that the only way to succeed is with the support of all our members and friends. This Lodge is larger than any one person or event, yet it can only continue if we all work together. Please take the time to come to a meeting, call a Brother, or just keep the Lodge in your prayers. Masonry is a fabulous organization. It is an organization we are all passionate about. We all find some aspect of Masonry that helps to make each of us better people.
Fraternally,
Tim

Brethren:
As the month of May is now upon us, it signifies the end of our first trimester! Can you believe that we are already in the fourth month of this Ma- sonic year? Time flies when we are having a good time!
Speaking of good times, thanks to all the members who were active last month in April. We shared great times at the Past Masters Dinner, the movie night, at the Burbank on Parade, and at passing a couple of Brethren to the degree of Fellowcraft. We also completed our officers line this past month. Brother Sterling Lockett was installed to the position of Junior Steward. Congratulations Sterling! It is great to have you on board! Kelly and I also really enjoyed ourselves at the Junior Wardens Retreat at the end of the month. We both gained so much knowledge, met so many new people, and were introduced with so many great ideas to really aid me on my journey to the ancient chair in the East. Thanks again to Burbank Lodge for the opportunity to attend, and I promise that it will turn out to be a good investment.
May is another exciting month for me because of the traditional Trout Fry Dinner in honor of our very own Inspector Worshipful Don Griffiths. I also look forward to Burbank Shrine Club visiting us that night. The big question is what hat will Worshipful Chris Barnes be wearing that night? Will it be that of the Shrine Club President, or the Officers Coach, or that of a Past Master, or will he be doing dishes in the kitchen with the DeMolays as their Chairman..... Anyway, I hope to see all members and their wives and families on May 6 at this dinner. Everybody is welcome and RESERVATIONS ARE A MUST! The price is $7.00 with reservation and $ 10.00 without. The second dinner of the month will be on May 27 when I get to honor a Brother who will be raised to the sublime degree of Master Mason. This is always a special event for all Master Masons in attendance. Reservations are a must for this dinner also. Please show your support to our Brother and be in attendance that evening. As Spring is in the air, please enjoy the longer days and take time to smell the roses that have surely bloomed again!

The Lantern in our Lodge
|
|
Brethren:
A visitor to our building appears and sees the old street lamp in our Lodge building. The lamp is not an old street lamp, its not a fake or a replica, it is a real honest to goodness lantern and it is a part of our history and heritage given to us by our Brothers who founded our Lodge almost 90 years ago.
A small group of dedicated Masons who may have come from all walks of life had one common hope and desire. It was to petition the Grand Lodge of California for a charter to form a Masonic Lodge in Burbank, They appeared before a Grand Lodge investigating committee and were examined and found to be Brothers honest, straight, and true, well versed and knowledgeable in Masonic rituals and ceremonies and equally important, proficient in initiating, passing and raising candidates,
They were found to be well qualified to govern a Masonic Lodge and the charter was granted, forming Burbank Lodge No. 406 F. & A.M. They met and held their meetings in a room above the old Story Hardware store on San Fernando Road. The air conditioning in the warm Summer months was an open window and the hope of a cool breeze. In the cold nights of winter the chill of the evening was warmed by a pot bellied stove. They had an eye to the future and no one could imagine the beautiful air-conditioned building we now enjoy.
What does the Lantern have to do with the beginning?
Our lantern hung outside the Story Hardware store and when it was lit, those Brothers knew the Lodge was at labor. It was hung over the entrance where all that attended entered and climbed the stair. Those Brothers as they arrived, some surely walked, came by horse or arrived in one of those new machines called an "auto-mobile." As they entered, our lantern shed its light equally on each other and everyone.
The next time you attend a Lodge meeting, before going into the Lodge room, take a moment and stand under our lantern and take a good look at the lantern. Then close your eyes and think of the Brethren and those who followed and perhaps our lantern may shed some light on your Masonic journey.
