Trestleboard Messages for June 2004

From the East

Brethren,
The first half of the Masonic year is coming to a close and I would like to thank all the Officers and Brethren for your support and dedication to the Lodge. You have all made my job as Master a pleasant experience thus far. To the Officers, your determination and commitment to degree work and Lodge events does not go unnoticed. In my opinion, Burbank Lodge has and continues to set the standard for the other Lodges in our district, and you are the reason for that notoriety. To our members, your support and attendance to our events, dinners and degrees is very much appreciated. Our newer Entered Apprentices, Fellowcrafts, and Master Masons need your support and there is not a better way to show it than to attend Lodge and other events to share with them your experiences in Masonry. Our Lodge has, and continues to make tremendous progress since the move from downtown Burbank. We are attracting new members and gaining momentum that should sustain our livelihood for several years.
Congratulations to Brother Shant Muradian for being raised to the Sublime Degree of Master Mason, this is an accomplishment you will never forget.
Brother Nathan Canterbury, I am pleased to see your hard work is paying off as you have passed to the degree of Fellowcraft. We look forward to raising both you and Brother Roy Lozano this month to become Master Masons. As stated before, you are all great additions to the Lodge and I look forward to your growth as Masons.
In the next few months, we have some good things on the horizon for the Lodge. We are planning another Dodger Night, an Angels Night, a Hollywood Bowl Picnic with the Burbank Shrine Club, a 50-Year Veterans Award dinner, the annual BBQ, a Cruise to Ensenada, Mexico and much more. I have put together a phone committee to contact all of you for these events, so if you have questions, please do not hesitate to ask them. Please continue to check the Calendar of Events for the dates and times. We do need your reservations in a timely manner for these events to ensure their success, so please call the Lodge or let someone know if you are planning to attend.
Happy Father’s Day to all you fathers out there.
Fraternally,
Jason Cunningham,
Worshipful Master

From the West

Brethren!
Hello! I send Greetings from the West. Summer has sure hit Southern California. As we are all trying to do the best we can to stay as cool as possible. Let's not forget that the Burbank Masonic Center is Air Conditioned. It makes a great place to stay cool and visit with your friends and Brothers in Masonry. So check out the calendar on your trestleboard. We are enjoying many great family functions this year and I encourage each of you to come by and check them out.
This month we will be doing our second major Child I.D. event at Assemblyman Frommer's Burbank Block Party at Johnny Carson Park on June 5th from 11 AM to 3 PM. Worshipful Bill Cunningham has graciously offered to take charge of this event while I, along with the other lodge officer's, will be attending a District event. Worshipful Cunningham needs your help and support, so please take a moment and visit him and the rest of the Brothers helping him with this event. If you have any questions, contact him at 818-848-3750.
We had our first Child I.D. event last month at the Burbank Police and Fire Service Day. It was a real success. We met the parents of approximately 224 children and had a great time. I thank Worshipful Jason Cunningham, Worshipful Bragg, C. Mark Steiger and Sterling Lockett for all their help. The event went on without a hitch. If you get a chance, ask Worshipful Bragg or Worshipful Jason Cunningham how the Child I.D. program helped them to find a lost child on the very day of the event!
Fraternally,
Timothy J. Halm,
Senior Warden

From the South

Brethren:
Now that the month of June is upon us, I would like to wish everybody a pleasant summer. Beat the heat and come join us in our nice air conditioned Masonic Center. We have another action packed month full of degrees.
We have two third degrees scheduled this month; one on the 10th and one on the 24th. These are the only two events this month where I will be in the kitchen cooking. There is no better deal in town! No where else can you get a beautiful steak dinner including appetizers, dessert, and all of the trimming for only $10.00 including tax and tip! Please be sure to make a reservation at least two days prior to the event. As usual, there is always good food and fellowship available one hour prior to every stated meeting, and a nice dessert to follow. I challenge every member of this lodge to support our newest Entered Apprentice on the 17th as well as witnessing the two raising on the dates above written. Make a difference and come to Lodge!
“Do not condemn the judgment of another because it differs from your own. You may both be wrong.”       (Damdemis)

May Almighty God in his infinite mercy,
Grant that we may meet again, to part no more.

From the Secretary's Desk

Brethren:
Fathers Rejoice! Father's day is June 20th.The third Sunday of June is generally observed as Father's Day throughout the United States. Although an isolated church service in Fairmont, West Virginia, honored fathers in July 1908 at the suggestion of Jessica Clinton Clayton, it is Sonora Louise Smart Dodd of Spokane, Washington who is most frequently credited with originating - in 1909 - the idea for a Father's Day observance that spread far beyond the confines of her own church. Her inspiration was her own father, William Smart, a Civil War veteran who had been widowed when his daughter and five sons were very young. Realization of the difficulties he had, and appreciation for his constant devotion to his family sparked Mrs. Dodd's desire to honor all fathers. At her urging the Spokane Ministerial Association sponsored the first Father's Day Celebration. This first celebration was held in Spokane on the third Sunday of June - the month of her father's birth - in 1910, with local ministers calling the attention of their congregations to the appreciation fathers deserved. William Jennings Bryan, complimented Mrs. Dodd on the inspiration for Father's Day , and remarked," too much emphasis cannot be placed upon the relation between parent and child."
The observance of Father's Day did not spread rapidly - not, for instance, as rapidly as Mother's Day, whose celebration in this country predated it only slightly. Several people in various other parts of the United States also hit upon the idea of a Father's Day independently - though to this day Mrs. Dodd is credited with beginning the celebration. President Woodrow Wilson officially approved the idea of Father's Day in 1916.
Harry C. Meek, president of the Uptown Lions Club of Chicago called upon both President Warren Harding and President Calvin Coolidge in unsuccessful attempts to have the day marked with issuance of a presidential proclamation. But, both were apprehensive about possible commercialization of the day. However, most state governors each year proclaim that Father's Day will be observed on the third Sunday in June in their states. Then in 1966 President Lyndon Johnson issued a Proclamation that Father's Day is observed on the third Sunday in June. On Father's Day in 1970 Mrs. Dodd, still living in Spokane, stressed the fact the one very important, timely, practical value attached to Father's Day was to provide an occasion for children to express appreciation of their fathers and for fathers to acknowledge their responsibilities to their children. God bless all Fathers past, and present. Copied.

Norm Furman, Secretary

OPERATION PHONE HOME

Operation Phone Home is a campaign designed with the goal of providing prepaid international phone calling cards to as many military men and women serving overseas as can be reached. It will be an ongoing effort as long as American Military Personnel serve overseas, particularly in Iraq, Afghanistan, and the Balkans.
The Masonic Service Association, on behalf of the Masonic fraternity, has entered into an agreement with the USO to participate in this program. MSA has met all of the requirements necessary to have a web site presence and a link to the USO web page and to have a Masonic Logo on the phone card. The card will include the logo of the USO, the participating phone company (AT&T), and the American Flag. On the left side of the card will appear the Square and Compasses and the words Compliments of America's Freemasons. (Image below)
Anyone wishing to participate in this program may send a donation marked Operation Phone Home to:
                              The Masonic Service Association
                              8120 Fenton Street
                              Silver Spring, MD 20910-4785.
All of the monies received will go to this program and an accounting will be made by MSA at the end of each calendar year.
Or go to http://freemasonry.org and follow the links.

Thank you very much for your help!
