Trestleboard Messages for November
and December 2004

From the East

Brethren,
It is hard to believe the end of this Masonic Year is almost here. There have been many events this year that I am proud to have been a part of. The success of these events could not have been possible without the officers and committees, but more importantly, not without you. Thank you for supporting the Lodge through the good times and bad. I know every Mason in our Lodge will not always see “eye to eye”, but as long as we voice our opinions and concerns, I think we as a Lodge will continue to grow. The strength in Burbank Lodge comes from the fellowship and brotherhood that has existed for almost 100 years, and this year is no different. I hope we continue to spread our beliefs and convictions as good men in the community so that our Craft will continue to shine. Masonry continues to thrive in Burbank with new members, family involvement, youth groups, and a very strong core of officers that will carry us into the future. I am looking forward to Brother Halm’s installation as Worshipful Master of Burbank Lodge No. 406. He has some great ideas for our Fraternity and I know he is eager to share them with you. Please mark your calendars early for Saturday, January 15th as this is the date he has planned for installation.
The next few weeks should be busy in the Lodge with degrees and other social affairs. As I have mentioned at the past few Stated Meetings, on November 20th we will be hosting Grand Lodge for our building dedication ceremony. Although Grand Lodge will not be opening, Most Worshipful David Doan will be conducting the dedication ceremony along with many of the Grand Lodge Officers. There will also be a program from our public schools as well as other community involvement. This event will be open to the public and I would hope that all of your friends and family will be able to attend. I would like to see all of you there to support your Lodge, so please make arrangements to be here. My thanks go out to all the committee members and Brethren who have helped this event come to fruition. I know there was a lot of hard work put into planning and you deserve much praise.
The month of December is a traditionally slow month due to the holidays, but I would like to invite all of you out to our holiday evening scheduled for Thursday, December 16th. I have put together a group of Brethren to help plan this event which I hope will be as successful in the years past. Please contact the Lodge for further details.
Congratulations to our newest Master Mason, Brother Nathan Canterbury. He was raised to the sublime degree on October 21st by our Past Masters. This was not only a special event for you Brother Nathan, but to our entire Masonic family here in Burbank. To all the new Entered Apprentices and FellowCrafts, congratulations as well, we look forward to your growth in the Lodge.
As the holiday season approaches, I would ask that all of you keep in your hearts the good men and women of our Armed Forces. These dedicated soldiers have kept alive our country’s honor with their dedication to ensure the world is a more peaceful place. Some of the Brethren of Burbank Lodge have been called to serve and I know we all wish them well and a speedy return, God bless all of you!

Fraternally,
Jason Cunningham,
Worshipful Master

From the West

Brethren!
The Holidays are upon us! I would like to take this time to wish all of you a Happy, Healthy, and Prosperous Holiday Season.
Thank You to the Brethren of Burbank Lodge for giving me the opportunity to join Worshipful Cunningham, Brother Barnes and Brother Brennan at Grand Lodge. As is the case every year, the Annual Communication was filled with important issues, spirited debate, and plenty of Brotherhood. If any of the Brothers have questions about the voting results, please feel free to contact us. We would love to fill you in.
On Saturday, October 23rd, Burbank Lodge had the great opportunity to work with Burbank’s Kiwanis Clubs by presenting our Child ID program. It was a great event and a real pleasure to work with some of our community’s great service organizations. My thanks to everyone who helped make this event successful.
My congratulations to Brother Nathan Canterbury on becoming the newest Master Mason in Burbank Lodge. My compliments go out to the Past Masters and lodge officers who put on a great degree.
I usually try to finish my article with some sort of thought or encouragement related to lodge. However, for this article, I wish everyone the best this Holiday Season and encourage you to remember those Brothers and friends throughout the world who can’t be with their friends and family at this most wonderful time of year.

Fraternally,
Timothy J. Halm,
Senior Warden

From the South

Brethren:
I am writing this article to you as the last in 2004. Where has the year gone? As per the calendar on the front, this Trestleboard will bring us through the last nine weeks of the calendar year. In other words, Happy Turkey Day as well as Seasons Greetings all in the same sentence. As for my kitchen report, it will be a slow end of the year. Although there are possibly going to be three degrees, there will be no dinners preceding any of these events. I will have to make it up with savory appetizers and decadent desserts on these nights. Once again I will make my request. Come join us for fellowship and Great Grub!
I also wanted to thank the Lodge again for the generous monetary reimbursement given to me for my journey to Grand Lodge. It was my first time ever attending and I had a great time. Sessions were informative and the debates were heated. It is amazing to think that decisions we made will affect Freemasonry for years to come. I also had a wonderful time socializing with Masons from all across the State of California. The most fun that I had was partaking in fellowship and getting to know my own Lodge Brothers better. I challenge every Officer and Lodge member, as well as their wives and ladies, to attend this annual communication in October 2005. Come see what you have been missing!
In closing, the 2005 Masonic Year is almost here and 2006 will be right around the corner. I would like to encourage every Mason, from the youngest Entered Apprentice to the oldest Past Master, to please come to me with any ideas, comments, or suggestions that you might have regarding Masonry in general and Burbank Masonic Lodge in particular. It is never too early to start planning. I encourage any and all of you to please contact me at any time with comments!
“Slow down and enjoy life. It’s not only the scenery you miss by going too fast -you also miss the sense of where you are going and why.“ Eddie Cantor (1892-1964)
Last but not least, I have wonderful news. In case you haven’t heard, I am going to be a “Daddy!” Kelly and I are expecting our first child on May 05, 2005. Needless to say, we could not be happier!

Fraternally,
Kenneth L. Barnes

From the Secretary's Desk

Brethren:
Note — the year 2005 is almost upon us. Lodge dues have been increased by the Brethren to $64.00 per year. Remember, a portion of your dues and other investments maintain the operational expenses of your Lodge. And, unfortunately some Brethren have not kept current with their dues.
Pursuant to the By-Laws of the Lodge and Section 19040 Article IX, of the California Masonic Code, dues are payable in advance on or before the first day of January.
A dues remittance envelope is enclosed and each of you is encouraged to pay your dues to help keep your Lodge solvent. Check your dues receipt and verify if your dues are current. If your dues are not current, send your current and past dues payment in the envelope provided to you. It is the desire of the Officers and Brethren of the Lodge to retain the membership of all Brethren in the greatest Masonic Lodge in California.
Happy Thanksgiving, Happy Holidays, Merry Christmas and especially A Happy and Proserous New Year to one and all!

Fraternally,
Norm Furman, Secretary

OPERATION PHONE HOME

Operation Phone Home is a campaign designed with the goal of providing prepaid international phone calling cards to as many military men and women serving overseas as can be reached. It will be an ongoing effort as long as American Military Personnel serve overseas, particularly in Iraq, Afghanistan, and the Balkans.
The Masonic Service Association, on behalf of the Masonic fraternity, has entered into an agreement with the USO to participate in this program. MSA has met all of the requirements necessary to have a web site presence and a link to the USO web page and to have a Masonic Logo on the phone card. The card will include the logo of the USO, the participating phone company (AT&T), and the American Flag. On the left side of the card will appear the Square and Compasses and the words Compliments of America's Freemasons.
(Image below)
Anyone wishing to participate in this program may send a donation marked Operation Phone Home to:
                              The Masonic Service Association
                              8120 Fenton Street
                              Silver Spring, MD 20910-4785.
All of the monies received will go to this program and an accounting will be made by MSA at the end of each calendar year.
Or go to http://freemasonry.org and follow the links.

Thank you very much for your help!
