Trestleboard Messages for July — August 2005

From the East

Brethren & Ladies,
Have you ever picked up a local community newspaper? Iþm not referring to the valley section of the L. A. Times, but rather the Burbank Leader, La Crescentaþs Record Ledger, or any other such publication. I try to pick one up every once in a while, as a way of keeping myself up to date on what is happening in my local area. I find it to be quite interesting, the issues that donþt make it on the 11:00pm news are often the very issues that will have the greatest immediate impact on my life.
Like so many people in the metropolises of America, I work at a business that is a decent distance from my home. I am usually in a frantic state when I leave for work having left with too little time to accomplish all the chores I have to manage while on my way to work. Then the journey home is equally as hectic as I join the throngs of other drivers desperately trying to get home to see their children, their spouse, their pets, or just to catch a meal, get some more chores done, and watch the 11:00pm news. Where is the time we spend with our neighbors? Is it on the weekends in between all the Honey-Do lists and the trips to this place and that? Where is the time for your Masonic Lodge, where so many of your neighbors and friends can and do meet?
Sometimes we need to really make the effort to stop for a moment and look around our home. Find out whatþs going on at the community center up the street. See what the local Masonic Lodge or other service club is doing in our community. Maybe check out the local high schoolþs theatre production, or just pick up the local newspaper and learn a little bit about the place we call home. Stop and smell those roses, remember to make that time for yourself, I promise youþll be a little better for it.
Fraternally,
Timothy J. Halm,
Worshipful Master

From the West

Brethren!
Greetings from the West! Can you believe that this Masonic year is all ready half over? This Trestleboard signifies another personal Masonic milestone for myself. I am officially half way finished with my three years of writing these Trestleboard articles!Unfortunately June was another slow month for Burbank Lodge.
Outside of the Stated Meeting, Family Night, and Officers Practices, we hosted no events. Although half way through a Masonic Year we may sometimes feel þweary and worn out,þ we need not forget that we still have six more months to go. In my efforts in trying to keep this Lodge a place that you desire to be at, I would like to start promoting a þLadies Eventþ at the Stated Meeting on October 6th.
Preceding the event, please come for dinner on that evening also. While the men are in their meeting, their ladies can enjoy themselves at an event planned just for them. More details to come in the September Trestleboard.
On the same note, I would like to thank everybody who has contributed several ideas to me as suggestions for the 2006 Masonic Year. If elected as Master next year, our calendar will be filled with events that you will not want to miss! Ladies, that goes for you too!
We are still a couple officers short of a complete officerþs line. Please contact me if you would like to fill one of these positions. This month is also the start of Lodge qualifications. Best wishes to the Lodge as a team, as well as each individual, who are all working so hard to become proficient in their ritual.
Good Luck in your endeavors! Just keep in mind the steak dinner we receive when everybody is 100% qualified! Never forget that practice makes perfect!
In closing, Kelly and I would like to thank everybody who has expressed so many wonderful thoughts and well wishes during this beautiful time in our lives of starting our family. Our son, Dillon Edward, is doing great and we could not be happier!
Congratulations to Wor. Greg Bragg and his wife Holly on the birth of their baby girl on June 01. I wish everybody a very fun and safe summer. I look forward to writing to you again in September.
“Your future is created by what you do today, not tomorrow.” Rich Dad.
Fraternally,

From the South

Brethren:
The summer is here and our 2005 Masonic year is now half over!
I would like to invite all of our Brethren, their family and friends to a few events we will have over the summer.
We will have a Family Night on July 28th. There will be lots of food and fun. If you have not been able to attend one of our family nights then you are truly missing out. We have had on average 65 people in attendance. There is a free dinner and entertainment for all, so bring your family and enjoy the casual fun filled evening at Burbank Lodge.
The second event that I would like to promote and encourage everyone to attend is the annual BBQ August 4th. We will have an award winning BBQ at McCambridge Park starting at 6:00 P.M. The park is located on the comer of San Femando Rd., and Amherst, right across the street from Carl's Jr. As always this will be a well-attended event, an opportunity for many to see old friends and hopefully make new ones.
Over the next few months all of the Officers will be working hard on their ritual to qualify for the next Masonic year, I would like to thank the guys for all of their hard work so far, and for the many hours of work to come. If you are not an officer, please thank the ones who are, and acknowledge them for all of the time and energy they have given to our Lodge so we can succeed.
There will be no family night in August, as the Lodge Is traditionally dark during this month. There will be one m September and the following months, so we will see you there.
Fraternally,
John T. Brennan,
Junior Warden

From the Secretary's Desk

Brethren:
“Prosperity is only an instrument to be used, not a deity to be worshipped.” From a speech in June 1928 by Calvin Coolidge (1872-1933)

FREEMASONRY, A WAY OF LIFE

The making of a Freemason consists in a continued course of education, training and character forming. While it may be accepted that it is an innermost desire, followed by obligations, that makes one a member of the Craft, yet in a truer sense, a man is not a Freemason unless he lives up to his obligations. Keeping this in mind, you have to realize that as an organization Freemasonry has "Members" and it has "Masons" and the two are not necessarily the same.
The Mason goes into deeper research about Freemasonry and the more extensive knowledge of its hidden art and mysteries. The philosophy of Freemasonry, when discovered and then accepted and practiced, provides simple but profound solutions to the problems of human relationships. Freemasonry is a way of living to the Mason who is interested enough to appraise and value the wealth that is his by virtue of his Masonic Membership.
The best-informed Master Mason is the Master Mason who reads and studies about the Craft. He reads and learns to understand the "Volume of the Sacred Law" of his religion and he also should read and study the "Volume of the Sacred Laws" of other religions. For to be able to have some understanding of what others believe, you have to have some knowledge of what it is that they believe. It is with this knowledge and understanding that a Mason is able to find common grounds to come together with others, in Love, Peace, and Unity for the good of all mankind with any good man of any race, creed, or religion.
We are all members of the greatest fraternity in the world. Need help, just ask. And, I ask, has Masonry failed you, and if so, why.
      Let your Lodge know!

Fraternally,
Norm Furman, Secretary

The Masonic Family & The American Cancer Society Fundraiser.

On Saturday, July 9 starting at 8:00 A.M. and Sunday, July 10 finishing at 8:00 A.M. at the Robert E. Gross Park (formerly the Lockheed Employees Recreation Center) the American Cancer Society is hosting “The Relay for Life” 24 Hour fundraiser for cancer research.
Chris Barnes P.M. is asking the Masonic Family to volunteer in this fundraising event.
Sign up and be a part of a team and walk or run for cancer research. Each team member will help by asking for donations or sponsorships from friends, family, co-workers and associates for this “Relay for Life” event. These sponsorships are direct donations, walking or running by the distance (mile), by the number of steps or by the minute. Each participant will help fight cancer.
Everyone in the Masonic Family must know someone who has been affected by cancer and we all would like to beat this illness. Remember your participation as a walker or runner along with your direct donation or sponsorship to a participating individual will help accomplish this mission.

e-mail: Chris Barnes P.M. or call 818-248-8074 or 818-383-7064 (cell)

OPERATION PHONE HOME

Operation Phone Home is a campaign designed with the goal of providing prepaid international phone calling cards to as many military men and women serving overseas as can be reached. It will be an ongoing effort as long as American Military Personnel serve overseas, particularly in Iraq, Afghanistan, and the Balkans.
The Masonic Service Association, on behalf of the Masonic fraternity, has entered into an agreement with the USO to participate in this program. MSA has met all of the requirements necessary to have a web site presence and a link to the USO web page and to have a Masonic Logo on the phone card. The card will include the logo of the USO, the participating phone company (AT&T), and the American Flag. On the left side of the card will appear the Square and Compasses and the words Compliments of America's Freemasons.
(Image below)
Anyone wishing to participate in this program may send a donation marked Operation Phone Home to:
                              The Masonic Service Association
                              8120 Fenton Street
                              Silver Spring, MD 20910-4785.
All of the monies received will go to this program and an accounting will be made by MSA at the end of each calendar year.
Or go to http://freemasonry.org and follow the links.

Thank you very much for your help!
