Brethren!
Happy November everybody! Isn’t this just the most wonderful time of year? Fall is now upon us, the weather is finally cooling off, trees are turning different colors and looking spectacular, Thanksgiving is just around the corner, and Burbank Lodge holds its annual election of officers. It is indeed that time of year again! Please come out to the Stated Meeting and take part in electing next year’s officers. Every vote counts, and that
includes yours!
One of my many responsibilities this year to qualify in ritual to become Master is to commit to memory the third degree lecture. In part of this beautiful lecture is written: “The Hour Glass is an emblem of human life. Behold, how swiftly the sands run, and how rapidly our lives are drawing to a close! We can not without astonishment behold the little particles which are contained in this machine; how they pass away almost imperceptibly, and yet, to
our surprise, in the short space of an hour they are all exhausted. Thus wastes man! Today, he puts forth the tender leaves of hope; tomorrow, blossoms, and bears his blushing honors thick upon him; the next day comes a frost which nips the shoot; and when he thinks his greatness is still aspiring, he falls, like autumn leaves, to enrich our mother earth.” I was unfortunately reminded last month how precious and short life really is. Always get the most out of every day and remind those
who you truly care about how much you really love them!
“Opportunity is missed by most people because it is dressed in overalls and looks like work.”

Brethren:
This year our Worshipful Master Tim Halm, Senior Warden Ken Barnes, my wife Susan & I, along with our Secretary Norm Furman, P.M. all enjoyed our trip to Grand Lodge.
Are you aware that Grand Lodge has an open invite for all Master Masons and their ladies? There are events going on each day for men and women, which can be a good time to meet new people and socialize with old friends. This year we started back a tradition of Burbank Lodges, holding a “Hospitality Suite” for all Brothers and their Ladies. This was a huge success for our lodge. We had approximately sixty people who stopped by to say hello. The
fraternal relations that were gained that evening will be remembered among many, and will show that Burbank Lodge is out there and well respected. I encourage all of our Brethren and their ladies to consider going to Grand Lodge next year.
November is busy for Burbank Lodge. We have two very important nights that you will not want to miss. First is November 10th, which is our 50 Year Awards presentation night. Everyone is welcome to attend that evening. There will be a dinner starting at 6:30 P.M. and reservations must be made with Norm Furman, Secretary at 818-848-3750. I hope to see a big turnout for all of our Brethren who will be receiving such a high
honor.
The second event is November 17th, which is our Past Masters Night. We will have a Third Degree that evening. There will be a Steak Dinner served at 6:30 P.M. prior to the degree. Please make your reservations with the Secretary. This event is for Master Masons only.
Lastly, I would like to wish all the Brethren and their families a very Happy Thanksgiving! I hope to see everyone at Burbank Lodge through the Holiday Season and the next few months.
Fraternally,
John T. Brennan,
Junior Warden

Stress Management
A lecturer, when explaining stress management to an audience, raised a glass of water and asked, "How heavy is this glass of water?" Answers called out ranged from 20g to 500g. The lecturer replied, "The absolute weight doesn't matter. It depends on how long you try to hold it.
If I hold it for a minute, that's not a problem. If I hold it for an hour, I'll have an ache in my right arm. If I hold it for a day, you'll have to call an ambulance. In each case, it's the same weight, but the longer I hold it, the heavier it becomes." He continued, "And that's the way it is with stress. If we carry our burdens all the time, sooner or later, as the burden becomes increasingly heavy, we won't be able to carry on." "As with the glass of
water, you have to put it down for a while and rest before holding it again.
When we're refreshed, we can carry on with the burden." "So, before you return home tonight, put your burden down. Don't carry it home. You can pick it up tomorrow.
Whatever burdens you're carrying now, let them down for a moment if you can." So, my friend, why not take a while to just simply RELAX.
Put down anything that may be a burden to you right now. Don't pick it up again until after you've rested a while. Life is short. Enjoy it!
Here are some great ways of dealing with the burdens of life:
Accept that some days you're the pigeon, and some days you're the statue.
Always keep your words soft and sweet, just in case you have to eat them.
Always read stuff that will make you look good if you die in the middle of it.
Drive carefully. It's not only cars that can be recalled by their maker.
If you can't be kind, at least have the decency to be vague.
If you lend someone $20 and never see that person again, it was probably worth it.
It may be that your sole purpose in life is simply to serve as a warning to others.
Never buy a car you can't push.
Never put both feet in your mouth at the same time, because! then you won't have a leg to stand on.
Nobody cares if you can't dance well. Just get up and dance.
Since it's the early worm that gets eaten by the bird, sleep late.
The second mouse gets the cheese.
When everything's coming your way, you're in the wrong lane.
Birthdays are good for you. The more you have, the longer you live.
A truly happy person is one who can enjoy the scenery on a detour.
You may be only one person in the world, but you may also be the world to one person.
Some mistakes are too much fun to only make once.
We could learn a lot from crayons. Some are sharp, some are pretty and some are dull. Some have weird names, and all are different colors, but they all have to live in the same box.
Remember 2006 is nearly upon us. As Master Masons, practice those truly commendable virtues;
Brotherly Love, Relief and Truth!
And, remember to keep your dues current and relieve the distressed.
Please have - A Happy Thanksgiving!

Norm Furman, Secretary

GRANDMA'S CURES
Did You Know That?
Hunt's tomato paste boil cure: Cover the boil with Hunt's tomato paste as a compress. The acids from the tomatoes soothe the pain and bring the boil to a head.
Balm for broken blisters: To disinfect a broken blister, dab on a few drops of Listerine - a powerful antiseptic.
Heinz vinegar to heal bruises: Soak a cotton ball in white vinegar and apply it to the bruise for 1 hour. The vinegar reduces the blueness and speeds up the healing process
OPERATION PHONE HOME
Operation Phone Home is a campaign designed with the goal of providing prepaid international phone calling cards to as many military men and women serving overseas as can be reached. It will be an ongoing effort as long as American Military Personnel serve overseas, particularly in Iraq, Afghanistan, and the Balkans.
The Masonic Service Association, on behalf of the Masonic fraternity, has entered into an agreement with the USO to participate in this program. MSA has met all of the requirements necessary to have a web site presence and a link to the USO web page and to have a Masonic Logo on the phone card. The card will include the logo of the USO, the participating phone company (AT&T), and the American Flag. On the left side of the card will appear the Square and
Compasses and the words Compliments of America's Freemasons. (Image below)
Anyone wishing to participate in this program may send a donation marked Operation Phone Home to:
The Masonic Service Association
8120 Fenton Street
Silver Spring, MD 20910-4785.
All of the monies received will go to this program and an accounting will be made by MSA at the end of each calendar year.
Or go to http://freemasonry.org and follow the links.
Thank you very much for your help!
