Trestleboard Messages for May 2006

From the East

Brethren & Ladies,
      If I were writing in a journal, this would be entry number twenty-eight. After twenty-seven Trestleboard articles, I thought that I would run out of ideas to write about. On the contrary, I can write a book just talking about our wonderful past events and also our exciting to come. If you have not gotten involved, jump on board quick to ride the wonderful wave of excitement that the rest of the year has awaiting us!
      If you missed last month, you missed another great month. I dedicate last month to our Star Player Bro. Jeff Yates for very hard work. He was the representative from our Lodge that coordinated and planned our annual Public Schools Night. His efforts made our Lodge shine in front of over 200 people from the public who attended the event. A week later, Bro. Yates served as Master of the Lodge and, for the first time, obligated a man and made him a Mason. At the end of the month, Bro. Yates also proudly led our Lodge through the first qualification in preparation for next year, when he served as Master in the Entered Apprentice degree in front of our District Inspector. Congratulations Burbank Lodge, and congratulations Bro. Yates! Great Job! I congratulate Bro. French, our newest Entered Apprentice Mason, who also happens to be the grandson of Bro. Joe Larrson. To close the month, I am also proud to say that we read four new petitions this month from men desiring to become Masons! Yes, I said four!
      Needless to say, the month of May is going to be another exciting one. As always, the month will start with the Stated Meeting. As usual, prior to the meeting, we will have our annual fish fry dinner, but this year it will have a special twist. Instead of fried trout, we will be serving fresh fish and chips. (I’m sure that Wor. Art Beddoe will enjoy it!) As before, women in attendance will be free for dinner as a guest of Burbank Lodge, as well as any Mason from our Lodge who will be having a Birthday in the month of May! Also, as usual, while the men are conducting their meeting, their will be a ladies program hosted by my Lady Kelly. And to top the evening off, this is traditionally the annual Burbank Shrine Club Official Visitation as well as the Inspectors Official Visit. Wow, what a night! Please, if you have not already done so, book your reservation for both our Laughlin trip in June, as well as our Ensenada Cruise in November! You won’t want to miss either one! Contact our Secretary if you need any information.
      I thank our Junior Warden, Brother Marc Canterbury, for his hours of hard work in the kitchen. He is doing a wonderful job, and I really appreciate your huge efforts. In closing, I wish all of the Ladies with children a very Happy Mothers Day on the 14th. This will be Kelly’s first, so I especially hope that she has a wonderful day!

From the West

Brethren!
      My wife Susan & I attended the Senior Wardens retreat April 21st þ April 23rd in Manhattan Beach. We enjoyed meeting new people, and hearing all of the great ideas, which we hope to be able to implement throughout the next year. We would like thank the lodge for affording us the opportunity for this weekend.
      Thank you to Jeff Yates for all of his hard work on the Public Schools night. It was a successful evening at the Burbank Masonic Center.
      On May 6th & 7th from 10:00a.m. to 2:00p.m. we will be hosting the Child ID program at OSH Hardware Store in Burbank. I would like volunteers to assist on these days. Please contact me ASAP if you are able to assist. This is a great way to help our community, and spread the word of Masonry.
      May & June will be very busy for our lodge, so be sure to follow the Trestleboard to keep up with all of the events.

Fraternally,
John T. Brennan, Senior Warden

From the South

Brethren:
      I hope everyone had a Happy Easter and Passover. Is everyone looking forward to the spring and summer months just as much as I am? A special thanks to Chris and Judy Barnes for cooking April’s stated meeting dinner. I really appreciate all they did and I heard it was a great success! As most of you know, my son Nathan, and the Lodge’s Jr. Steward, had knee surgery April 6th. He is doing well and hopes to return to Lodge real soon.
      This month proves to be another busy one as the Burbank Lodge will be receiving its Official Visit from Worshipful Don Griffiths, Inspector of the 326th District, as well as the Burbank Shrine Club making their Official Visit.
      This month’s stated meeting menu: “Fish Fry”. For those who do not care for fish, chicken will be served as the alternative. Please make your reservation by Tuesday, May 2nd. Should you call the lodge after that, I cannot guarantee I will have enough food for everyone. I would like to reiterate how important it is to make dinner reservations and I appreciate all of you who do.
      Additionally in my list of thank you’s, I thank the Brethren of Burbank Lodge for giving my wife and I the opportunity of attending the Junior Warden Retreat on May 5, 6, and 7th. When speaking with other past Junior Wardens’ I hear how informative it was for them.
      Note: Rooms are still available for the Ensenada Cruise in November. Please make your reservations by calling Denise Weed at the Auto Club at (818) 615-2253 and the Secretary at the Lodge.
      In closing, the reality of traveling to the East is setting in. It is hard to believe how fast time has gone by in 2006.

Fraternally,
Marc S. Canterbury
Junior Warden

From the Secretary's Desk

Brethren:
      The following article was contributed by Brother Robert Unger, a member of Burbank Lodge.

WHAT TEACHERS MAKE

      The dinner guests were sitting around the table discussing life. One man, a CEO, decided to explain the problem with education. He argued, "What's a kid going to learn from someone who decided his best option in life was to become a teacher?"
      He reminded the other dinner guests what they say about teachers: "Those who can, do. Those who can't, teach." To stress his point he said to another guest; "You're a teacher, Susan. Be honest. What do you make?"
            Susan, who had a reputation for honesty and frankness replied, "You want to know what I make?”
            I make kids work harder than they ever thought they could.
            I make a C+ feel like the winner of the Congressional Medal of Honor.
            * I make kids sit through 40 minutes of study hall in absolute silence. "You want to know what I make?”
            * I make kids wonder.
            * I make them question.
            * I make them criticize.
            * I make them apologize and mean it.
            * I make them write.
            * I make them read, read, read.
            I make them show all their work in math and perfect their final drafts in English. I make them understand that if you have the brains, and follow your heart, and if someone ever tries to judge you by what you make, you must pay no attention because they just didn't learn."
            Susan paused and then continued. “You want to know what I make? 'I MAKE A DIFFERENCE.' What do you make?"
      “Teachers make every other profession possible!"

      April was Public School’s Month and Burbank Lodge honored three Teachers of the Year from the Burbank Schools.

OPERATION PHONE HOME

      Operation Phone Home is a campaign designed with the goal of providing prepaid international phone calling cards to as many military men and women serving overseas as can be reached. It will be an ongoing effort as long as American Military Personnel serve overseas, particularly in Iraq, Afghanistan, and the Balkans.
      The Masonic Service Association, on behalf of the Masonic fraternity, has entered into an agreement with the USO to participate in this program. MSA has met all of the requirements necessary to have a web site presence and a link to the USO web page and to have a Masonic Logo on the phone card. The card will include the logo of the USO, the participating phone company (AT&T), and the American Flag. On the left side of the card will appear the Square and Compasses and the words Compliments of America's Freemasons.
(Image below)
      Anyone wishing to participate in this program may send a donation marked Operation Phone Home to:
                              The Masonic Service Association
                              8120 Fenton Street
                              Silver Spring, MD 20910-4785.
      All of the monies received will go to this program and an accounting will be made by MSA at the end of each calendar year.
      Or go to http://freemasonry.org and follow the links.

Thank you very much for your help!
