Trestleboard Messages for September 2006

From the East

Brethren & Ladies,
As September is now here, I hope everybody can reflect upon a summer filled with plenty of rest and relaxation. Although I did miss my Masonic Brethren last month, I did enjoy a little bit of down time in the month of August. I apologize for missing the Stated Meeting in August due to a death in the family, but I would like to express my deepest gratitude to all the people who have contacted us and offered their condolences. Times like these really remind me what being a Mason is all about!
I would also like to thank our Junior Warden, Brother Marc Canterbury, for stepping up that evening and running the entire meeting as well as providing a great dinner at our annual BBQ!
The last two months have been very exciting. We had the pleasure of raising two Master Masons in July. I again congratulate Bro. Kory Kupiszewski and Bro. Steve Drinkwater for both being raised to the sublime degree of Master Mason.
After reigning first in the district, Burbank Lodge also went on to compete at the next level in California's ritual competition. We competed in the second section of the third degree. The good news is that we put on the best performance yet!
The unfortunate news is that we were edged out by Old West and settled for second place. Although we did not get to proceed any further, I am very proud of all the Burbank Lodge members who competed. We will do it next year! Also, thanks to all of the anglers who supported the Lodge deep sea fishing trip in August. We had a "whale" of a time! And finally, the month of August was capped off by a wonderful Social Night. It began with a great performance from the Grand Bethel Champions, Bethel 97, who started the evening with some wonderful singing. This was followed by a Barber Shop Quartet called "The Usual Suspects" who finished the evening with some wonderful singing. The evening concluded with an ice cream social in the dining hall.
I hope to see everybody back in the swing of things this month. As always, the Stated Meeting will begin with a family dinner at 6:30 P.M. Every body is welcome, and as usual, the Ladies will be our guest. Reservations are a must. After the Stated Meeting, we will be strictly business. We will be having one first degree night, and two second degree nights. If all goes well, we will be performing six degrees this month! Can you believe it! Anyways, please come out and support our Lodge and our deserving Brethren.
A reminder to the Brethren, that beginning the October Stated Meeting, the starting time will be 7:30 P.M.
"Whether you think you can or think you can't, you're right." --Henry Ford.

Fraternally,
Kenneth L. Barnes,
Worshipful Master

      A BLUE LODGE PUZZLE
Can you find the 15 names in this puzzle?
All pertain to the first three degrees of Freemasonry. They may be found in many positions-horizontal, vertical and diagonal. A number are spelled backwards.
Here are some clues: There are two Hiram's and a St. John. The GATU is mentioned three times and there are three prominent craftsmen. Others include a very wise man; a leader of his people; a prophet; a judge of Israel; a man with a ladder and a Greek mathematician.

From the South

Brethren:
Summer is still amongst us and it does not appear that it will be over with any time soon!! I hope everyone is trying to stay cool.
I am pleased to report that the picnic once again, was an overwhelming success. If you were unable to attend this year, make plans to attend next year's annual event. Now that September has approached us, I am entering my last few months as cook for this Lodge. Although I will be passing this duty along to good hands, I have always enjoyed cooking for the Lodge and have done so for many events in the past years, even before I became a Mason.
This month's dinner will be a surprise (in other words, I'm not sure what I will be cooking up this month), but rest assured fish fans, fish will be back this month! When you make your reservations, please do so by Tuesday, September 5, 2006. This is the Tuesday after Labor Day, so it is imperative that I have all reservations by that date. Cost of September's dinner will be $10.00 for the men, and of course, ladies eat free.
I am looking forward to seeing everyone in September. Please have a safe Labor Day weekend and stay hydrated in this heat!!!
Fraternally,
Marc S. Canterbury,
Junior Warden

From the Secretary's Desk

WHAT A MEETING IT WILL BE!

As we are all aware, and as is pointed out in the North East Angle Lecture in the Canadian Rite/Ritual, it cannot be denied that we always had many members of rank and affluence. Over the centuries many well-known men have been members of our Noble Craft. For a few moments, please allow your imaginations to run wild and consider what may take place at the Installation of the Celestial Lodge, otherwise known as the Grand Lodge Above.
Even though it was late fall, there was a warm breeze blowing and the sun was setting behind the Lodge Hall. Gathered in the parking lot filled with their works were Brothers Henry Ford, Ransom Olds, Walter Chrysler, John Willys and Andre Citroen. The only vehicle missing was Brother Hart Massey's tractor.
Greeting members in the entrance hall was Brother Cliff Arquette of Charley Weaver fame and Brother Ed Wynn. In the boardroom, a group of senior DeMolays were gathered including Brothers Walter Disney, Chet Huntley, Wendell Corey, Van Johnson, Robert Cummings, John Steinbeck, Fred McMurray and John Cameron Swayze. King Gillette, razor in hand, passed the lodge caretaker who was having a minor problem with his vacuum cleaner, which was quickly cleared up with the help of its inventor, Brother Frank Hoover, while at the other end of the hallway Brothers Emmett Kelly, Clyde Beatty and all seven of the Ringling Brothers were discussing the Shrine Circus.
Taking a quick look into the Banquet Hall, Brothers John Molson, Frederick Pabst and Joseph Schlitz were busy rolling in some kegs of beer for Brothers Sam Bronfman, late President of Seagrams Distillers, who was setting up the bar for the Festive Board to follow the ceremony. Brother Colonel Harland Sanders was cooking up a storm in the kitchen and it was an easy guess as to what the evening meal would consist of. The orchestra members for the dance to follow the banquet were tuning. Members of this all-star group includes leader Paul Whitman, WC Hardy, Nat King Cole, Irving Berlin, George M. Cohan, Cyril Stapleton, Duke Ellington, Louis Armstrong, Count Basie and Al Jolson. Tonight's performance would be emceed by Brothers Arthur Godfrey and Danny Thomas. Magical Brothers Harry Houdini and Harry Blackstone were setting up their props while Brothers W.C. Fields, Oliver Hardy, Bud Abbott, Harp Marx and Foster Brooks were fine tuning their comedy routines for tonight's show which was being produced by Brothers Cecil B. DeMille, Flo Siegel, Louis B. Mayer, Hall Wallis and D.W. Griffith.
A number of sports celebrities were gathering together including Brothers Abe Saperstein, creator of the Harlem Globetrotters who was explaining his version of the game to Brother James Naesmith, the inventor of the game. They were joined by baseballers Brothers Charles Ebbetts, Ty Cobb, Branch Rickey and Cy Young, the first pitcher to be inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame. A little further along the hall was an array of Masons dressed in knee breeches, lace cuffs and powdered wigs: others in tuxedos, including Brothers Kit Carson, Davy Crockett and Buffalo Bill Cody, clad in their familiar buckskins, Chief Crazy Bull, Tecumseh and Joseph Brant in their native attire. Most colorful are the military uniforms of Lord Nelson, Lord Cornwallis, Captain James Cook, the Duke of Wellington and John Paul Jones.
I was gazing in awe at these members of the Celestial Lodge, when the Grand Master, Most Worshipful Brother Harry Truman appeared from the preparation room accompanied by Brothers John Jacob Astor, Luther Burbank, J.C. Penney, Adlai Stevenson and Jennings Bryan.
Brother John Diefenbaker had just signed the Tyler's Register with one of Brother John Schaeffer's pens. He was accompanied by Brothers Robert Borden and R.D. Bennett, fellow Canadian Prime Ministers, and by Brother Joe Smallwood. At this time the Tyler, Brother J. Edgar Hoover, informed the Brethren that the meeting was about to come to order.
On entering the lodge room, the brethren were greeted by the Inner Guard, Brother Paul Revere. Seated already were Polar explorers Robert F. Scott of England and Brother Richard E. Bird of the United States, together with Matthew G. Perky and Canada's Henry Larsen. Brother Charles Lindbergh could be seen in deep conversation with Brothers Hap Arnold, Gus Grissom, Eddie Rickenbaker and Charles Kingsford-Smiths.
From the Junior Warden's station came a burst of laughter. Brother Will Rogers had brought broad smiles to the faces of the royal personages gathers around him, including George I, Frederick the Great, Gustav V of Sweden and George VI. To the right of the Junior Warden's chair, architect Sir Christopher Wren, Brothers Norman Vincent Peale and Peter Marshall, who would assume the Chaplain's duties this evening, were in conversation with the DuPonts, Peter and Victor, and the Rothschilds, James and Nathan.
Gathered around the Secretary's desk, Brother Rudyard Kipling was discussing the evening's proceedings with Brother Robert Burns, who was to give one of the charges, assisted by Brother Mark Twain. Also taking part were Brothers Conan Doyle, Walter Scott, Samuel Johnson, Alexander Pope and Robert Service.
The Grand Organist, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, was discussing last minute changes with Brothers Gilbert and Sullivan. Brothers Clark Gable, Peter Sellers, Wallace Beery, Douglas Fairbanks and Brian Donleavy were discussing boxing with champions Jack Dempsey, Jack Johnson and Sugar Ray Robinson. Another small group, in the persons of Brothers John Wayne, Hoot Gibson and Tom Mix, were listening to Brother William Thaddeus Phillips, also known as Butch Cassidy.
The founding members, Brothers George Washington, Sir John A. MacDonald, Giuseppe Garibaldi, Benito Juarez, John Hancock and Ben Franklin were seated in the East. They have been joined by Sir Stamford Raffles, founder of Singapore.
The Generals, Omar Bradley, Jimmy Doolittle, George C. Marshall, John Pershing and Douglas McArthur, take their seats next to Franklin Roosevelt and Winston Churchill.
The Lodge Treasurer Brother Henry Knox, was busy collecting dues from Brothers Thomas E. Dewey and William McKinley.
The Master, Most Worshipful Brother HRH the Duke of Connaught, has rapped the gavel to call the Lodge to order and it is now time for us to depart. With one last look at this brilliant assembly, one wonders what the public's perception of Freemasonry might be if they were able to visit such a lodge.

A Message From the Master’s Lady

Hello Friends,
Well the summer is over, and fall will start very soon. I hope everyone had a wonderful summer filled with great vacations and happy memories.
As many of you already know, I lost my Uncle at the end of July and Ken, Dillon and I were not able to attend the Stated Meeting because of his funeral arrangements.
I would like to start by saying Thank You Francine Lockett for calling all the ladies that had signed up with me prior to August 1st deadline, to let them now I was canceling the woman's event. Francine, your dedication to the lodge is really appreciated and you are always there to help. A BIG "THANKS" goes out to all of you who have called, sent cards, or prayed for my family during this difficult time. This is one of the many reasons why I am proud to say I am part of Masonry; we all stick together when we need each other the most.
I would like to invite all ladies to come to the Burbank Masonic Center in September for our Stated Meeting/Dinner. Burbank Lodge has had the ladies be their guest at all the dinners during this year. I want to remind you that reservations are mandatory for anyone who would like to have dinner before the stated meeting. You MUST make a reservation with the Secretary Norm Furman at (818) 848-3750.
The ladies event for this month will be making blankets for the children at the Shriners Hospital. It will not be hard to make all you have to know is how to tie a knot. There will be a $10.00 charge for this event. If you will be participating, please bring with you a pair of scissors that are good and sharp; we will be cutting through material. Like always, I would like to make sure that there will be enough supplies for all to participate, so please let me know if you plan to be at the demonstration.

      Love Always,
      Kelly Barnes, Worshipful Master’s Lady

OPERATION PHONE HOME

Operation Phone Home is a campaign designed with the goal of providing prepaid international phone calling cards to as many military men and women serving overseas as can be reached. It will be an ongoing effort as long as American Military Personnel serve overseas, particularly in Iraq, Afghanistan, and the Balkans.
The Masonic Service Association, on behalf of the Masonic fraternity, has entered into an agreement with the USO to participate in this program. MSA has met all of the requirements necessary to have a web site presence and a link to the USO web page and to have a Masonic Logo on the phone card. The card will include the logo of the USO, the participating phone company (AT&T), and the American Flag. On the left side of the card will appear the Square and Compasses and the words Compliments of America's Freemasons.
(Image below)
Anyone wishing to participate in this program may send a donation marked Operation Phone Home to:
                              The Masonic Service Association
                              8120 Fenton Street
                              Silver Spring, MD 20910-4785.
All of the monies received will go to this program and an accounting will be made by MSA at the end of each calendar year.
