Trestleboard Messages for November 2006

From the East

Brethren & Ladies,
Can you believe that the month of November is already upon us? What a wonderful time of year. I love to see the season changing, the leaves falling, the chill in the air, and one of my favorite holidays... Thanksgiving! I hope everybody can pause for a short time this month and reflect upon what you have to be thankful for. I could write a book on all of the things that I have to be thankful for, but at the top of the list is the health and happiness of my family. As long as I have them, I could survive without anything else.
As always, we have another action packed month here at Burbank Lodge. As tradition has it this year, our month will start off by our stated meeting and another wonderful meal prepared by our Junior Warden, Brother Marc Canterbury, and family.
Ladies, due to your immense support this year, we will again have you as our guests this month for Stated Meeting Dinner. Once again, EVERYBODY PLEASE MAKE RESERVATIONS! We set sail on our cruise to Ensenada on the very next day. As country music legend Toby Keith once said, “What happens down in Mexico, stays in Mexico!”
On Thursday, November 9th we will have a First Degree for an active DeMolay, Mr. Jake Sizemore, son of long time member, Brother Dave Sizemore. We will also have a Third Degree this month the following week, preceeded by a dinner (Remeber to make reservations!). Please, come support our officers and candidates and attend these degrees.
At the end of the month, we will have a Social Night. For only $3.00, you get great entertainment and a delicious dessert bar following. Most importantly, you get to share in some Brotherhood and Fellowship. Come one, and come all.
Please note under future events, in December we will be honoring a deserving Brother with the Hiram Award. Please keep this date open. The candidate has not been announced yet, but please keep the date available. Also in December, Worshipful Vern Ross, Past Master from Magnolia Park No. 618 will be honored with the Hiram Award from his Lodge. Congratulations Worshipful Vern!
In closing, I congratulate Burbank Lodge for finishing its final qualification in October. The lodge is now ready to advance and change officers for the 2007 Masonic year. Congratulations Gentlemen!

From the West

Brethren!
Does anyone know a DeMolay, Jobs Daughter or Rainbow girl who will be, or is already attending College? Well there is a great benefit that can be offered to them from the High Twelve Club. It is called the Ensign Mayo Loan Fund. The Ensign Mayo High Twelve Loan Fund provides no-interest scholarship loans for members of the youth organizations to help complete their college educations. Loans of $1,000 are paid back after graduation. More than $700,000 is in the revolving loan fund. I can personally say that this is a true advantage, and every person in our Masonic youth groups who attends college should benefit from this fund. I spoke with a representative of the Ensign Mayo Loan Fund at Grand Lodge, and he said that they have plenty of money to lend, and all who can, should apply. Brethren and Ladies, please advise our youth on the great benefits that the High Twelve has to offer.
Grand Lodge was successful, and for those who went, I think we all had a good time. We had time for business, and time for fellowship. Next year Grand Lodge will be held over the weekend of September 28th, 29th, and 30th. I have already reserved five rooms for our lodge, so if you would like to attend next year please let me know.       As we enter into the Holiday Season, Susan & I would like to wish everyone a Happy Thanksgiving, and hope that you are able to spend this time with Family, and close friends.
Fraternally,
John T. Brennan
Senior Warden

From the South

Brethren:
It's hard to believe that Thanksgiving is just around the corner, with the Christmas season to follow. I feel like I just took down my Christmas lights and now I have to put them back up again!
As the holiday season approaches it is time to give thanks to all the men and women serving in our Armed Forces and for keeping this great nation a safe place to live. It is hard to imagine what type of world this would be without their great service and dedication to their fellow countrymen.
Keeping with tradition, a Thanksgiving meal with all the fixinžs and trimmin’s is planned for this monthžs stated meeting night including Pumpkin Pie for dessert!!! Please feel free to extend an invitation to your neighbor or family, as all are welcome for dinner and can join the ladies group after dinner. Just remember to include them in your reservations! No fish will be served at this month’s dinner.
Please make your reservations by Monday, October 30, 2006. I strongly urge you to make reservations as soon as possible so that we will have enough food this month! As usual, the cost of dinner will be $10.00 for the men, and of course, ladies eat free.
"As we express our gratitude, we must never forget that the highest appreciation is not to utter words, but to live by them." John Fitzgerald Kennedy

A Message From the Master’s Lady

Hello Friends, Hello Friends,
      Hello Friends,
I had so much fun last month watching Christopher Barnes Jr. show us a little bit about what Pampered Chef is all about. It was nice to relax and enjoy everyone’s company. If you didn’t notice we had 17 women participate in the presentation. Thank you for all for coming out and supporting our program.
I invite all ladies to come to the Burbank Masonic Center on November 2nd for the Stated Meeting and dinner. Burbank Lodge has changed the time of their stated meetings to 7:30 P.M., so our ladies event will be starting at 7:30 P.M. instead of 8:00 P.M. I want to remind you that reservations are mandatory for anyone who would like to have dinner before the stated meeting. You MUST make a reservation with Norm Furman, Secretary at (818) 848-3750 prior to the meeting.
The ladies event for this month will be a fall wreath. Judy Barnes will come back by popular demand and teach us again how to make a holiday wreath. The cost for this craft will be $5.00 per wreath, which will cover all supplies that it will take to make this project. If you plan on making the project please come with a Phillips screwdriver. To make sure that there will be enough supplies for all to participate, please let me know if you plan to make a wreath at the demonstration.
Also, I hope to see you all on the last Thursday of the month (November 30th) at our Social Night. We will be having entertainment and a dessert bar. It sounds like a sweet way to spend the evening.
In closing, I think that sometimes in the mist of the holidays, we sometimes forget why we are celebrating. So, I would like you all to know what I am thankful for this year that my family is safe, my friends are near, and that there is a roof over my head. Remember those who might be a little less fortunate than us during the holiday season. God Bless Us All!

      Love Always,
      Kelly Barnes, Worshipful Master’s Lady

P.S. A big thank you to Virginia Dodge for dressing up for Halloween at last month’s stated meeting.

OPERATION PHONE HOME

Operation Phone Home is a campaign designed with the goal of providing prepaid international phone calling cards to as many military men and women serving overseas as can be reached. It will be an ongoing effort as long as American Military Personnel serve overseas, particularly in Iraq, Afghanistan, and the Balkans.
The Masonic Service Association, on behalf of the Masonic fraternity, has entered into an agreement with the USO to participate in this program. MSA has met all of the requirements necessary to have a web site presence and a link to the USO web page and to have a Masonic Logo on the phone card. The card will include the logo of the USO, the participating phone company (AT&T), and the American Flag. On the left side of the card will appear the Square and Compasses and the words Compliments of America's Freemasons.
(Image below)
Anyone wishing to participate in this program may send a donation marked Operation Phone Home to:
                              The Masonic Service Association
                              8120 Fenton Street
                              Silver Spring, MD 20910-4785.
All of the monies received will go to this program and an accounting will be made by MSA at the end of each calendar year.
Or go to http://freemasonry.org and follow the links.

Thank you very much for your help!

The Things that Make a Soldier Great

Brother Edgar A. Guest

The things that make a soldier great and send him out to die,
To face the flaming cannon's mouth nor ever question why,
Are lilacs by a little porch, the row of tulips red,
The peonies and pansies, too, the old petunia bed,

The grass plot where his children play, the roses on the wall:
'Tis these that make a soldier great. He's fighting for them all.
Tis not the pomp and pride of kings that make a soldier brave;
'Tis not allegiance to the flag that over him may wave;

For soldiers never fight so well on land or on the foam
As when behind the cause they see the little place called home.
Endanger but that humble street whereon his children run,
You make a soldier of the man who never bore a gun.

What is it through the battle smoke the valiant solider sees?
The little garden far away, the budding apple trees,
The little patch of ground back there, the children at their play,
Perhaps a tiny mound behind the simple church of gray.

The golden thread of courage isn't linked to castle dome
But to the spot, where'er it be — the humblest spot called home.
And now the lilacs bud again and all is lovely there
And homesick soldiers far away know spring is in the air;

The tulips come to bloom again, the grass once more is green,
And every man can see the spot where all his joys have been.
He sees his children smile at him, he hears the bugle call,
And only death can stop him now — he's fighting for them all.

God Bless our Troops
