Trestleboard Messages for January 2007

From the East

Brethren & Ladies,
A happy and prosperous new year to everybody! I hope that everybody experienced a wonderful Holiday Season and is excited about 2007 as I am. Well, with 35 issues down, this is my last and final Trestleboard article.
As 2006 came to an end, December was a fun month. Congratulations again to Worshipful Norm Furman on receiving the Hiram Award.
Now that it is January, we are back in full swing. As usual, the first Thursday of the month will be our Stated Meeting with a dinner prior. This is going to be a really special evening because we will be dedicating the Lodge Room to our very own, Worshipful Richard B. Carter. From that night on forward, it will be called the “Richard B. Carter Masonic Lodge Room.” We have many other highlights this month including 3 Fellowcraft degrees, an Installation of Officers, and three Entered Apprentice degrees! We are backlogged on degrees, so I am happy to be knocking some of them out. Please come and support our events as always, but especially our degrees. Attend the degrees and make a difference in a young Mason’s life. Congratulations to all of the 2007 Officers to be installed!
Seeing that I will only be the sitting Master for a few more weeks, I would like express a few things. First and foremost, I would again like to thank Burbank Lodge 406 for the opportunity to serve as the Worshipful Master for the 2006 Masonic Year. It has been a wonderful opportunity for me personally, and I have established friendships that I will forever cherish. The end of this year is bitter-sweet for me. Although I am excited to have extra time to dedicate to my family, my career, and lost hobbies, I am definitely going to miss being part of the day to day operations of the lodge. But as they say, “All good things must come to an end.” On the bright side of things, I look forward to serving my lodge in different capacities. I am going to become certified in the funeral service, and I hope to have the opportunity to help the officers with degree work such as lectures and charges.
All of the lodge’s hard work this year has really made me shine. I thank all of the officers for their commitment that they had made, and for the obligation that they all fulfilled. I thank our Junior Warden, Brother Marc Canterbury, for his countless hours in the kitchen. He had a big job this year, and he did a wonderful job. A special thanks also to all of the Past Masters who have made special efforts to be so supportive this year. I thank Worshipful Chris Barnes (Dad) for being so supportive as Officer’s Coach, and to me personally. I appreciate our time in lodge together now more than ever. Last, but not least, I would like to thank my beautiful wife. You have done a wonderful job getting the Ladies Program off the ground this year. Thanks for all of your hard work, and most importantly, thank you for all of your support in all of my endeavors. I would not have been able to do any of this without your unswerving support. For the final time from the East, thank you so much!

“The best and safest thing is to keep a balance in your life, acknowledge the great powers around us and in us. If you can do that, and live that way, you are really a wise man.” (Euripides 484BC-406BC)
Fraternally,
Kenneth L. Barnes
Worshipful Master

From the West

Brethren!

THE OLD LAMBSKIN APRON

IT IS NOT ORNAMENTAL, THE COST IS NOT GREAT

THERE ARE THINGS MORE USEFUL, BUT TRULY I STATE

THAT OF ALL MY POSSESSIONS THERE’S NONE CAN COMPARE

WITH THAT OLD LAMBSKIN APRON THAT ALL MASONS WEAR

AS A YOUNG BOY I WONDERED JUST WHAT IT MEANT

WHEN MY DAD HUSTLED AROUND AND MUCH TIME WAS SPENT

ON SHAVING AND DRESSING AND LOOKING JUST RIGHT

UNTIL MOTHER EXPLAINED “IT’S THE MASONS TONIGHT.”

ON DARK WINTER EVENINGS SHE SAID “WHAT MAKES YOU GO?

UP THERE TONIGHT THROUGH WIND, SLEET AND SNOW

YOU WILL HEAR THE SAME THINGS EVERY MONTH OF THE YEAR.”

AND MY DAD REPLIED “YES I KNOW THAT MY DEAR,

FOR FORTY YEARS I’VE SEEN THE SAME THINGS IT’S TRUE

BUT ALTHOUGH THEY ARE OLD THEY ALWAYS SEEM NEW

THE HANDS THAT I CLASP AND THE FRIENDS THAT I GREET

SEEM A LITTLE BIT CLOSER EACH TIME THAT WE MEET”

YEARS LATER I STOOD AT THE VERY SAME DOOR

WITH GOOD MEN AND TRUE WHO HAD ENTERED BEFORE

I KNELT AT THE ALTER AND THERE I WAS TAUGHT

THAT VIRTUE AND HONOR CAN NEVER BE BOUGHT

THE SPOTLESS WHITE APRON THAT ALL MASONS REVERE

IF WORTHILY WORN GROWS MORE PRECIOUS EACH YEAR

THAT SERVICE TO OTHERS BRINGS BLESSINGS UNTOLD

THAT MAN CAN BE POOR THOUGH SURROUNDED BY GOLD

I LEARNED THAT TRUE BROTHERHOOD FLOURISHES THERE

THAT ENMITIES FADE NEATH THE COMPASS AND SQUARE

THAT WEALTH AND POSITION ARE ALL THRUST ASIDE

AS THERE ON THE LEVEL WE MEET AND ABIDE.

SO BRETHREN HONOR THE LAMBSKIN, MAY IT ALWAYS REMAIN

FOREVER UNBLEMISHED AND FREE FROM ALL STAIN

AND WHEN WE ARE CALLED BY OUR GREAT FATHERS LOVE

MAY WE ALL MEET AGAIN IN THAT GRAND LODGE ABOVE.

Fraternally,
John Brennan,
Senior Warden, Master-Elect

From the South

Brethren:
Happy New Year! Here’s wishing everyone a fabulously fulfilled 2007.
It’s hard to believe that I will be officially retired from kitchen duty this month. I wish our Junior Warden-Elect much success in this position and I know he will do a great job!
For my last stated meeting dinner, I am keeping it simple. This month’s menu will be a serve yourself hamburger and hot dog bar, along with chips, sodas, and dessert of some type. Sorry fish fans, I hung up my fishing pole on the retirement pegs at the December stated meeting. Cost of January’s dinner will be $10.00 for the men, and of course, ladies eat free. Please have your reservations to the Secretary by Tuesday, January 2, 2007.
I take this time to wish Worshipful Ken Barnes much success as one of Burbank’s Police Department’s newest members. What a great asset he is to the community of Burbank. Also I think that everyone would agree with the successful year he has had, along with his wife Kelly, rejuvenating the women’s group after the stated meetings. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for all of your time, energy, and commitment you have both made to this lodge. Both of you are great assets and we hope to see you at our future meetings.
I am looking forward to seeing everyone during this very busy month. Stay warm and stay healthy.
Fraternally,
Marc S. Canterbury,
Junior Warden, Senior Warden Elect

From the Secretary's Desk

Brethren:
To the Brethren of Burbank Lodge 406 a big THANK YOU for the Hiram Award presented on Thursday, December 14th in the lodge room. I will forever be proud to wear this distinguished award. Your support, your thoughts and assistance during my tenure as Secretary has made my job easy. Yes, there is frustration attempting to meet deadlines, editing, proofing, getting to print and mail the Trestleboard, balancing the books, make meetings, keeping accurate minutes and forever reminding (forgive me) everyone to be aware of deadlines.
      I “Love This Job”
And, I remind all the Brethren – Your Dues are Due!

Fraternally,
Norm Furman, Secretary

A Message From the Master’s Lady

Hello Friends,

Well, we had a nice turn out for our holiday wreaths and cookie exchange. A HUGE thanks goes out Mrs. Judy Barnes for helping us for the third time this year in making our beautiful holiday wreaths. I know that it takes time cutting the material and making sure there in enough for everybody. Thank you for all you do for us; your generosity does not go unnoticed. The ladies had a great time socializing and making their wreath. Thank you to all the ladies who brought cookies. They were all wonderful.
I invite all ladies to come to the Burbank Masonic Center on January 4th for our stated meeting and dinner. Remember that Burbank Lodge 406 has changed the time of their stated meetings to 7:30 p.m., so our ladies event will be starting at 7:30p.m. instead of 8:00 p.m. I remind you that reservations are mandatory for anyone who would like to have dinner before the stated meeting. You MUST make a reservation with the Secretary Norm Furman at (818) 848-3750 prior to the meeting.       I thought that for our last meeting of the year we could have a casual time together. I will bring a movie and popcorn, for us ladies to kick up our heals and relax. Every month we have been doing work so I thought we could use a little break. Come one come all to a movie at the lodge.
Being that this is my last article to you all, I am having a hard time writing it. First, Thank You to all the women who came and supported the ladies events. I really had a great time planning them and I think we did a variety of different things that anyone could enjoy. It was also really nice having such a great turn out of ladies at the stated meeting dinners. I think everybody liked the opportunity drawings. Ha ha ha ha! The ladies events were one of my main focuses for the 2006 year and I am very proud of its success.
To the Officers and their ladies. THANK YOU for supporting Ken and I this year. We had a great time planning all of our events and hope that you enjoyed what we had planned.
A BIG thanks goes out to Marc and Laurie Canterbury for a job well done. Your hard work and dedication in making the dinners every month, and for all of the special events in between. We couldn’t have done it with out you. Good Luck to all the officers and their ladies. I know that John and Susan will have a great year with continued success.
To Ken, you have had a WONDERFUL term as Master of this Lodge. Dillon, the baby, and I are very proud of your accomplishments and will always be your #1 fans. You are a loving husband, outstanding father, and great friend to all. You have brought togetherness, family, and fun back into lodge. I have had a great time watching you lead the Lodge into its next term.
The past year has been a lot of fun meeting new people along the way, getting to know friends even better, and always knowing that my family will always be loyal to me, and willing to help me out at anytime.

      Love Always,
      Kelly Barnes, Worshipful Master’s Lady

From Bethel 97

Brethren and Ladies,
Thanks to the Masons and their families who attended Bethel 97's Installation of Officers. Your attendance at this special ceremony (as well as all of our youth activities) is not only a morale booster for the girls, but adds a touch of prestige to the event. I would like to especially thank Worshipful Ken Barnes for performing as D.J. during the dance following the ceremony. Talk about prestige!
Bethel 97 is off to bright new term and hopefully, a Happy and Prospers New Year!
On behalf of Bethel Guardian Trish Vosper, Associate Bethel Guardian Andy DeCaro and the Daughters of Bethel 97, may you, your family and friends, do the same.

God Bless and Fraternally,
Jeff Yates, Senior Deacon

OPERATION PHONE HOME

Operation Phone Home is a campaign designed with the goal of providing prepaid international phone calling cards to as many military men and women serving overseas as can be reached. It will be an ongoing effort as long as American Military Personnel serve overseas, particularly in Iraq, Afghanistan, and the Balkans.
The Masonic Service Association, on behalf of the Masonic fraternity, has entered into an agreement with the USO to participate in this program. MSA has met all of the requirements necessary to have a web site presence and a link to the USO web page and to have a Masonic Logo on the phone card. The card will include the logo of the USO, the participating phone company (AT&T), and the American Flag. On the left side of the card will appear the Square and Compasses and the words Compliments of America's Freemasons.
(Image below)
Anyone wishing to participate in this program may send a donation marked Operation Phone Home to:
                              The Masonic Service Association
                              8120 Fenton Street
                              Silver Spring, MD 20910-4785.
All of the monies received will go to this program and an accounting will be made by MSA at the end of each calendar year.
