Trestleboard Messages for November 2007

From the East

Brethren & Ladies,
We have definitely had a couple busy, yet exciting months at Burbank Lodge. Thanks to everyone who s u p p o r t e d o u r Yo u t h appreciation dinner. There were over ninety people seated for dinner and our youth speakers were great.
Our Laughlin trip was a success! Those who went had a great time and enjoyed the fellowship we had with the Mojave Valley Lodge #68 in Bullhead City, Arizona.
Golden Veteran Award Presentation — This month we will be honoring Worshipful Ronald Robertson with his Fifty Year Golden Veteran Award at our Stated Meeting November first. I encourage everyone to make reservations and join us for dinner that evening and help honor Brother Ron.
First Degree — We will have an Entered Apprentice Degree for Mr. Billy Campbell on November 8th. Billy and his wife Lorrie joined us on our Laughlin trip where we were able to get to know them better. Billy comes from a Masonic background and is very excited about joining our Lodge. I encourage everyone to join us for his degree, so we can welcome him into our lodge as he takes his first step in Masonry.
Second Degree — We will have a Fellowcraft Degree for Brothers Daniel Maher and Andrew Mcreynolds on November 29th. Both of these Entered Apprentice Masons are very enthusiastic and have been active at our events.
Susan and I wish everyone and their families a Happy Thanksgiving!

Fraternally,
John T. Brennan,
Worshipful Master

From the West

Brethren!

                                  GEORGE CARLIN’S VIEWS ON AGING:

Enjoy the following. If you don’t read this to the very end, you have lost a day in your life.
Do you realize that the only time in our lives when we like to get old is when we’re kids? If you’re less than 10 years old, you’re so excited about aging that you think in fractions.
“How old are you?” “I’m four and a half!” You’re never thirty-six and a half. You’re four and a half, going on five!
      That’s the key.
You get into your teens, now they can’t hold you back. You jump to the next number, or even a few ahead. “How old are you?” “I’m gonna be 16!” You could be 13, but hey, you’re gonna be 16! And then the greatest day of your life you become 21. Even the words sound like a ceremony. YOU BECOME 21. YESSSS!!!
But then you turn 30. Oooohh, what happened there? Makes you sound like bad milk! He TURNED; we had to throw him out. There’s no fun now, you’re Just a sour-dumpling. What’s wrong? What’s changed?
You BECOME 21, you TURN 30, then you’re PUSHING 40. Whoa! Put on the brakes, it’s all slipping away. Before you know it, you REACH 50 and your dreams are gone. But wait!!
You MAKE it to 60. You didn’t think you would! So you, BECOME 21, TURN 30, PUSH 40, REACH 50 and MAKE it to 60. You’ve built up so much speed that you HIT 70! After that it’s a day-by-day thing; you HIT Friday!
You get into your 80s and every day is a complete cycle; you HIT lunch; you TURN 4:30; you REACH bedtime. And it doesn’t end there. Into the 90s, you start going backwards; “I Was JUST 92.”
Then a strange thing happens. If you make it over 100, you become a little kid again. “I’m 100 and a half!” May you all make it to a healthy 100 and a half!!

                                                HOW TO STAY YOUNG

      1. Throw out nonessential numbers. This includes age, weight and height. Let the doctors worry about them. That is why you pay “them.”
      2. Keep only cheerful friends. The grouches pull you down.
      3. Keep learning. Learn more about the computer, crafts, gardening, whatever. Never let the brain idle. “An idle mind is the devil’s workshop.” And the devil’s name is Alzheimer’s.
      4. Enjoy the simple things.
      5. Laugh often, long and loud. Laugh until you gasp for breath.
      6. The tears happen. Endure, grieve, and move on. The only person, who is with us our entire life, is ourselves and God. Be ALIVE while you are alive.
      7. Surround yourself with what you love, whether it’s family, pets, keepsakes, music, plants, hobbies, whatever. Your home is your refuge.
      8. Cherish your health: If it is good, preserve it. If it is unstable, improve it. If it is beyond what you can improve, get help.
9 Don’t take guilt trips. Take a trip to the mall, even to the next county; to a foreign country but NOT to where the guilt is. Live your life in such a way that there’s nothing to feel guilty about.
      10. Tell the people you love that you love them, at every opportunity.

                                              AND ALWAYS REMEMBER

Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away. And if you don’t send this to at least 8 people – who cares? But, do share this with someone. We all need to live life to its fullest each day!! I Love You!!!!!
Worry doesn’t help tomorrow’s troubles, but it does ruin today’s happiness.

From the South

Brethren:
In this month of thanks, I am particularly thankful for the fine men Masonry has introduced to me. Men like Worshipful Ron Robertson. Ron or “Robbie” as he is lovingly called is celebrating the anniversary of his fifty year commitment to our ancient and honorable Fraternity. It’s hard for me to imagine that Worshipful Robertson was made a Mason in the same year I was born. This fact makes him accomplished and me, well, old.
Worshipful Robertson’s 50th Anniversary Dinner Celebration will be at the November 1th Stated Meeting. Robbie has requested that steak be served. Thy will be done Worshipful!
Hors d’oeuvres will be waiting for you on the counter at 6:00 PM. Dinner is served a 6:30 PM. The menu includes: Steak or Salmon, (caught that day at Lake Costco) mashed potatoes, vegetable and salad. Dessert and coffee will be served after the meeting. As always, men $10.00 dollars, women and children are free. I would be very, very thankful if all you Pilgrims and Masons make reservations and specify your preference for beef or fish. Congratulations Worshipful Robertson and thank you.
Thanksgiving is of course, a time for reflection and gratitude, for our families, friends and the privilege of living in this great nation. Yes, it is still GREAT!
I wish you a Happy Thanksgiving.

Fraternally,
Jeffrey W. Yates,
Junior Warden

From the Secretary's Desk

Brethren:

This is the second of a two part article! Have you ever noticed how an Honor Guard pays meticulous attention to correctly folding the Flag of The United States of America 13 times?

1st Fold of the flag is a symbol of life.
2nd Fold is a symbol of the belief in eternal life.
3rd Fold is made in honor and remembrance of the veterans departing the ranks who gave a portion of their lives for the defense of the country to attain peace throughout the world.
4th Fold represents the weaker nature, for as American citizens trusting in God, it is to Him we turn in times of peace as well as in time of war for His divine guidance
5th Fold is a tribute to the country, for in the words of Stephen Decatur, “Our Country, in dealing with other countries, may she always be right; but it is still our country, right or wrong.”
6th Fold is for where people’s hearts lie. It is with their heart that they pledge allegiance to the Flag of The United States of America and to the Republic for which it stands, One Nation under God, Indivisible, with Liberty and Justice for all.
7th Fold is a tribute to its Armed Forces, for it is through the Armed Forces that they protect their country and their flag against all her enemies, whether they be found within or without the boundaries of their republic.
8th Fold is a tribute to the one who entered into the valley of the shadow of death, that we might see the light of day.
9th Fold is a tribute to womanhood, and Mothers. For it has been through their faith, their love, loyalty and devotion that the character of the men and women who have made this country great has been molded.
10th Fold is a tribute to the father, for he, too, has given his sons and daughters for the defense of their country since they were first born.
11th Fold represents the lower portion of the seal of King David and King Solomon and glorifies in the Hebrews eyes, the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.
12th Fold represents an emblem of eternity and glorifies, in the Christians eyes, God the Father, the Son and Holy Spirit.
13th Fold or when the flag is completely folded, the stars are uppermost reminding them of our nations motto; “In God We Trust.”

After the flag is completely folded and tucked in, it takes on the appearance of a cocked hat, ever reminding us of the soldiers who served under General George Washington, and the Sailors and Marines who served under Captain John Paul Jones, who were followed by their comrades and shipmates in the Armed Forces of the United States, preserving for them the rights, privileges and freedoms they enjoy today.
There are some traditions and ways of doing things that have deep meaning. In the future, you’ll see flags folded and now you will know why.
One Nation Under God, With Liberty And Justice For All. (Copied)

A Message From the Master's Lady

Hello Ladies,
With the holiday’s quickly approaching there are two things I think about. All of the gifts I need to buy and wrap, and all the children who are not fortunate enough to receive one of these gifts. Well, this month at our ladies event we will be addressing both of these issues!
We will be assembling shoe boxes filled with toys, school supplies and candy that will be donated to “Operation Christmas Child”. Everything will be provided for you. All you have to do is choose from the provided selection what you would like to put into your gift. After which we will have to wrap them…of course!
Debi Enokian will be joining us to teach us how to make some of the most beautiful bows to adorn your Christmas gifts this year! We will be able to make our shoe boxes look beautiful before they are shipped out, as well as take a few beautiful and creative bows home to help with our holiday wrapping! A donation of $5.00 would be appreciated to help cover the cost of all the supplies and shipping.
For everyone who attended the Laughlin bus trip, I hope you had as much fun as John and I did! We enjoyed such beautiful weather! Also, thank you to everyone who attended the youth appreciation night. I know that the Bethels were very excited to receive the “Project Night Night” bags that you put together for them! I look forward to seeing you soon!
If you would like to learn more about “Operation Christmas Child” you can go online to www.samaritanspurse.org

      Love,
       Susan Brennan, Worshipful Master’s Lady

OPERATION PHONE HOME

Operation Phone Home is a campaign designed with the goal of providing prepaid international phone calling cards to as many military men and women serving overseas as can be reached. It will be an ongoing effort as long as American Military Personnel serve overseas, particularly in Iraq, Afghanistan, and the Balkans.
The Masonic Service Association, on behalf of the Masonic fraternity, has entered into an agreement with the USO to participate in this program. MSA has met all of the requirements necessary to have a web site presence and a link to the USO web page and to have a Masonic Logo on the phone card. The card will include the logo of the USO, the participating phone company (AT&T), and the American Flag. On the left side of the card will appear the Square and Compasses and the words Compliments of America's Freemasons.
(Image below)
Anyone wishing to participate in this program may send a donation marked Operation Phone Home to:
                              The Masonic Service Association
                              8120 Fenton Street
                              Silver Spring, MD 20910-4785.
All of the monies received will go to this program and an accounting will be made by MSA at the end of each calendar year.
Or go to http://freemasonry.org and follow the links.

Thank you very much for our help!
