Trestleboard Messages for February 2008

From the East

Brethren & Ladies,
       I know this sounds cliché, but I take this opportunity to thank everyone, once again, for a wonderful Installation. Without all of your support, it would have not been the success that it was!
      Time to get started! February is a very busy month. Our first event will be the Super Bowl Party on Sunday, February 3rd. The festivities will begin at 2:00 PM, with the kickoff around 3:15. There will be plenty of food.
      Secondly, our Stated Meeting is Thursday, February 7th. Dinner is at 6:30 PM. Please make your reservations with Norm Furman by Tuesday, February 5th.
      The Sweetheart's Dinner is on Saturday, February 16th.
      On February 21st, there will be two First Degrees. I invite all Masons to join us and support our two new candidates.
      On Thursday, February 28th, I hope all will join us at the lodge for a district event presented by Marlene Gogue of Masonic Homes/Masonic Outreach Services, Sam Baum of Acacia Creek and Debra Stewart of the Order of Eastern Star. Dinner will be hosted by our speakers and will be served at 6:30 PM. Their presentation will begin at 7:15 PM. I believe there will be some valuable information given. Even if you are not in need of these services, you may help out a fellow brother some day or their widow with the information you are given.
      I am implementing some changes this year. The first one will be a new layout for the Trestle Board. I hope you find the new format more informative. I am working together with our Trestle Board Editor, Norm Furman, and hopefully in the next few months, all of the bugs will be worked out! Another change for the year is in regard to the Lodge's dress code. All officers will wear a coat and tie for Stated Meetings. Side line members should be dressed business casual or lodge shirts. T-shirts and shorts are unacceptable. Lodge shirts are available to purchase. Please contact Norm for price. My goal is to have members at the meetings and for them to feel comfortable with what they are wearing. Lastly, dinner reservations are a must. It is very difficult for our Junior Warden to prepare meals when there is no true count of people for dinner. As you all know, dinners are $10.00 for men and of course, ladies are free. Without reservations, the cost of dinner at the door will be, men $15.00 and $5.00 for ladies. This will be implemented at April’s Stated Meeting. This change is a must so that our Junior Warden can stay within his budget for the meals he prepares.
      I look forward to seeing everyone at my 1st Stated Meeting as well as all of February’s events

Fraternally,
Marc S. Canterbury,
Worshipful Master

From the West

Brethren!
      This year I am pleased to be responsible for the Child I.D. Service Program. Child I.D. is a gold mine for the Fraternity, not only for publicity, but meaningful community service. I can easily present this system anywhere families attend; fairs, farmer markets, large community events, schools, and the list goes on! I have already booked a space at the Burbank Fire Dept. Open House in May. I also have high hopes that we can perform this service at the Midnight Mission in Los Angles. The Jobs Daughters and DeMolay have graciously offered to help out at the different venues. If anyone is interested in assisting me with Child I.D. (especially the new members) please contact me.
      Burbank Lodge is experiencing growing pains. We are enjoying the greatest expansion of members we have seen in years. Worshipful Canterbury has scheduled Degrees of different levels throughout the year. The men we are initiating are dedicated, smart individuals with Masonry in their hearts. There are many members of our Lodge who have, for what ever reason, given up on us. Worshipful Canterbury and I cordially invite you back into the fold. Give Masonry another chance and rekindle your Masonic sprit.
      Burbank Lodge is on the verge of a return to greatness!

Fraternally,
Jeffrey W. Yates,
Senior Warden

“The New Year”

"A flower unblown; a book unread;
A tree with fruit unharvested;
A path untrod...
A landscape whose wide border lies
In silent shade 'neath silent skies;
A wondrous fountain yet unsealed;
This is the Year that for you waits
Beyond to-morrow's mystic gates."

From the Secretary's Desk

Brethren:
      As you may now have noticed, there is a new Trestleboard format with additional pages, some current articles, new articles, Masonic information and interlaced with a humor and quotes. Please send an email, notes/letters and maybe a phone call. The editor (me, Norm Furman, Secretary) would like your opinions. And, I know you won’t be bashful.
      Burbank Lodge is into the First Quarter of the year and some Brethren have not paid their dues for the Masonic year 2008.
      Pursuant to the By-Laws of the Lodge and Section 19040 Article IX, of the California Masonic Code, dues are payable in advance on the first day of January. It is the desire of the officers of the Lodge to remain solvent and retain the membership of all Brethren in the greatest Masonic Lodge in California.
      A dues remittance envelope was sent to all of the Brethren of the Lodge in December and will be sent again in March of this year. Check your dues receipt and verify if your dues are current. If not current, remit your dues in the envelope provided to you with your remittance.
       The Brethren and Officers desire each and every Brother remain a current member of Burbank Lodge. Your dues maintain the operation of your Lodge. Thank you for your consideration.

Fraternally,
Norm Furman, Secretary

The Old Masters Wages

      I Met a Dear Old Man Today Who Wore a Masonic Pin
      It Was Old and Faded like the Man. It's Edges Were Worn and Thin.

      I Approached the Park Bench Where He Sat to Give the Old Brother His Due
      I Said, "I See You've Traveled East He Said, "I Have, Have You"?.

      I Said, I Have and in My Day Before the All Seeing Sun
      I Played in the Rubble with Jubala, Jubilo and Jubalum.

      He Shouted, Don't Laugh at the Work My Son It's Good and Sweet and True
      And If You've Traveled as You Said You Should Give These Things a Due..

      The Work, the Sign, the Token, the Sweet Masonic Prayer.
      The Vow That You Have Taken You Have Climbed the Inner Stair..

      The Wages of a Mason Are Never Paid in Gold
      But the Gain Comes from Contentment When You're Weak and Growing Old..

      You See I've Carried My Obligations for Almost 50 Years
      It Has Helped Me Through the Hardships and the Failures Full of Tears.

      Now I'm Losing My Mind and Body - Death Is near but I Don't Despair
      I've Lived My Life upon the Level and I'm Dying on the Square

      Sometimes the Greatest Lessons Are Those That Are Learned Anew
      And the Old Man in the Park Today Has Changed My Point of View

      To All My Masonic Brothers the Only Secret Is to Care
      May You Live upon the Level and Part upon the Square.

            So Mote It Be!

FACING THE NEW YEAR

We pledge ourselves
To follow through the coming year

The light which God gives us;

The light of Truth, wherever it may lead;

The light of Freedom, revealing new opportunities
for individual development and social service;

The light of Faith, opening new
visions of the better world to be;

The light of Love, daily binding brother to brother and man to
God in ever closer bonds of friendship and affection.

Guided by this light, We shall go forward to the work
of another year with steadfastness and confidence.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY BRETHREN

OLD HUMOR

      Just before the funeral services, the undertaker came up to the very elderly widow and asked, "How old was your husband?" "98," she replied. "Two years older than me." "So you're 96," the undertaker commented. She responded, "Hardly worth going home, is it?"

      I feel like my body has gotten totally out of shape, so I got my doctor's permission to join a fitness club and start exercising. I decided to take an aerobics class for seniors. I bent, twisted, gyrated, jumped up and down, and perspired for an hour. But, by the time I got my leotards on, the class was over.

Lines from Laurie

Hello Ladies,
      I am looking forward to our new Masonic year and the events that are in the works.
      First and foremost, thank-you once again to Susan Brennan for continuing the Ladies Group. I know that you put a lot of hard work and effort into your events, and it certainly paid off as the group seems to grow every month!
      February is quite a busy month at the Lodge. The first event will be the Super Bowl Party, on Sunday, February 3rd at 2:00 PM Kickoff is approximately 3:15 and for those of you who don’t enjoy the game, I will have Bunco available to play. There will be prizes for the winners and of course, lots and lots of munchies.
      For the Stated Meeting on Thursday, February 7th, I am having a “Getting to Know You” session. I look forward to getting to know every one more. I also want to discuss some of the events I have planned for the year, as well as I would like some input as to what events you would like to have for our gatherings.
      On Saturday, February 16th is the Sweetheart’s Dinner. I hope to see every one there.

Concordant Programs
Information Dinner

      We’re letting everyone know about a District-wide event that will be held at Burbank Lodge No. 406 on Thursday evening, February 28, at 6:30. The event will feature presenters from Masonic Homes, Masonic Outreach Services, Acacia Creek and the Order of Eastern Star (O.E.S.), in what could be best described as a “Concordant Programs Information Dinner.” The Dinner will be at 6:30 with short presentations by representatives of all the programs mentioned starting at 7:00PM.

      Burbank Lodge Junior Warden, Andy DeCaro loves cooking for these types of events, so we got very lucky to have him lend his talents. Marc will see to it that we are covered for kitchen help and servers. On our end, we will be sending invitations to all members who live in the 326th District.

      A CALL TO ACTION!! Come join your Brothers, their ladies, sweethearts and others in the Masonic Family to hear about the full spectrum of benefits available to California Masons, their wives, widows, mothers and members of Eastern Star in this exciting first-of-its-kind event.

      A concordant programs information dinner. Drawing for great prizes, fantastic food and company and, best of All, learn about all the programs that are available to assist those In need. Arm yourselves with the information you need to help Fulfill one of our basic tenets…Relief.

       It should also be noted that there is no cost to attend and that those who need transportation should contact their Lodges to make carpool arrangements. As you know, many of those who would be most interested in this information either no longer drive at night or, in some cases, don’t drive at all. Your assistance in making that happen is most appreciated.

      We’ll be in touch soon with more details and to get your much needed input.

      We have set up a special toll-free number 866-559-0444 exclusively for District RSVPs.

Sincerely & Respectfully,
Marlene Gogue, Masonic Homes/Masonic Outreach Services
