Trestleboard Messages for March 2008

From the East

Brethren & Ladies,
Once again, we have a very busy month'coming up. Our stated meeting is March 6th. Brother Hank Williams will be assisting our Junior Warden Andy DeCaro with his famous Corned Beef and Cabbage, Saint Patrick's Day Dinner.
Our first co-event with Magnolia Park will be A Day at the Races on Sunday, March 9th, at Santa Anita Park. The cost of the event is $36.00 per person, which includes valet parking, clubhouse seating, and a buffet lunch. Make your checks payable to Magnolia Park Social Fund. If you anticipate going, please turn in your money quickly as tickets are going fast.
On March 13th, there will be two Entered Apprentice Degrees, for Mr. Jeffrey Couch and for Mr. Paulyn Santiago.
We have a Master Mason Degree for Brother Daniel Maher on March 20th. Brother Daniel's father will be flying in from Canada to witness his son being raised to the Sublime Degree.
On March 25th, we will have another Entered Apprentice Degree for Mr. Alex McArthur.
Brethren, this is an extremely exciting time for our Lodge. We are conferring more degrees than we have in a long time. Please come and join us in welcoming our three newest Masons into Burbank Lodge.
My hardiest congratulations to Brothers Jorge Lara and Simon Mcllroy in becoming our newest Entered Apprentice Masons. You have become members of the finest Masonic Lodge in California. I am very proud to call both of you my new brothers.
This past month, Right Worshipful Larry Adamson, Deputy Grand Master, spoke at the Masonic Service Bureau Breakfast. He discussed the growth of Masonry in California. I am very pleased to say that Burbank Lodge is taking a strong lead with initiating these fine candidates.
To recap the events from last month, the Super Bowl Party and Sweetheart's Dinner were a huge success. A good tine was had by all.

Fraternally,
Marc S. Canterbury,
Worshipful Master

From the West

Brethren!
"I always said, if you want to learn what defines a Mason, look as his feet. More to the point, what his feet are standing on. Look close, and you will see the shoulders of the man who trained and mentored him. It is truly said. Masons are linked together by an indissoluble chain of sincere affection.
Burbank 406 is in its 99th year as a Fraternity; that is a long chain, forged one link, by one Mason at a time.

MASONRY

Three thousand years have rolled away upon the tide of time
Since Masonry began her march of noble deeds sublime;
And though the angry showers of war have swept the earth with fire,
Her temple stands unscathed, unhurt, with sunlight on It's spire.
Ten thousand widows in their words have blessed her advent here,
And many a homeless orphan's heart has owned her tender care,
Full many a frail and erring son to dissipation given
Has heard her warning voice and turned his wayward thoughts to heaven.
Long may her beauteous temple stand to light this darkened spear,
To gild the gloom of error's night and dry the falling tear.
And when the final winds of time shall sweep this reeling ball,
Oh, may its glittering spires be the last on earth to fall!

                         — Brother James Alston Cabell, 1922

Brethren of the Burbank Masonic Center, I hope you have strong shoulders! For there are many new men, impatiently waiting for us to show them the light by which Masons now and will forever work. As for you. Entered Apprentices, have patience, your time is near. When you are called, open your minds, and roll up your sleeves, you have work to do.

Fraternally,
Jeffrey W. Yates,
Senior Warden

                                           — — — — — — — — — — — — — —

We live through the fine days without noticing them; only when we fall on evil ones do we wish to have back the former. With sour faces we let a thousand bright and pleasant hours slip by unenjoyed and afterwards vainly sigh for their return when times are trying and depressing. Instead of this, we should cherish every present moment that is bearable, even the most ordinary, which with such indifference we now let slip by, and even with impatience push on.

From the South

Brethren:
I now have a whole new look it seems that my older picture was a little out dated. I want to mention that we have been having great turnouts to all of our events so far this year which has been wonderful. Hopefully we can continue to have support and come out and have a good time. I also want to touch on the importance of making reservations our first event was the Super Bowl Party which we had over 50 people no reservations. Our stated meeting we had close to 60 people and a total of 33 reservations. Finally our Sweethearts Dinner which we had about 60 people and — you guessed it — not that many reservations. Please help me make the events more cost effective. We don't want to turn anyone away because we didn't plan for enough people. Make RESERVATIONS it is important.
A big thank you to all who helped me in the kitchen you were great and the food was wonderful. March 6th is our Stated Meeting there will be a St. Patrick's Day dinner. We will be having the traditional corned beef and cabbage prepared by our own Hank Williams so please plan to come and don't forget your reservations. Social at 6:00 PM and dinner will be at 6:30 PM. The cost is $10.00 for the men and the ladies are free. Make your reservation early by calling the Secretary at 818 848-3750.

ESTATE PLANNING

A single guy was living at home with his father and working in the family business. When he found out he was going to inherit a fortune when his sickly father died, he decided he needed a wife with which to share his fortune.
One evening at an investment meeting he spotted the most beautiful woman he had ever seen. Her natural beauty took his breath away.
"I may look like just an ordinary man, " he said to her, "but in just a few years, my father will die, and I'II inherit 20 million dollars. "
Impressed, the woman obtained his business card   —  —   three days later, she became his stepmother.

Women are so much better at estate planning than men!

From the Secretary's Desk

Brethren:
There are times when the Secretary gets somewhat frustrated. The U.S. Postal Service returns mail from Brethren who move and fail to inform the Lodge of their change of address. This action results in additional costs to the Lodge. These costs which continue to increase every year are a result of an unforgiving U.S. Postal Service that wants its "pound of flesh."
As a reminder the cost of first class postage is $.41 per mailing. A returned piece of mail is $.50. The total cost of this mailing is $.91. You may consider this cost meager in the relationship to a $3.50 gallon of gas or the cost of a gallon of water at $22.00 when you purchase the water by the bottle.
Please, when you move, email the Secretary, or send me via "Snail Mail" a Change of Address card provided FREE by the Postal Service. I'll be forever grateful.

Fraternally,
Norm Furman, Secretary

WALKING THE DOG

The little girl asked her Mom, "Mom, may I take the dog for a walk around the block?"
Mom replies, "No, because she is in heat."
"What's that mean? " asked the child.
"Go ask your father, he's in the garage."
The little girl goes to the garage and says, "Dad, may I take Belle for a walk around the block? I asked Mom, but she said the dog was in heat, and to come to you."
Dad said, "Bring Belle over here." He took a rag, soaked it with gasoline, and scrubbed the dog's backside with it to disguise the scent, and said "OK, you can go now, but keep Belle on the leash and only go one time round the block. "
The little girl left and returned a few minutes later with no dog on the leash.
       Surprised, Dad asked, "Where's Belle?
"The little girl said, "She ran out of gas about halfway down the block, so another dog is pushing her home."

HAPPY McBIRTHDAY BRETHREN

Lines from Laurie

Hello Ladies,
Well February brought the ladies group off to a great start! How fun it was getting to know each other a little more. Thank you ladies for your Valuable input and I look forward to getting to know everyone better. By overwhelming enthusiasm, Bunco is back for this month's ladies event. Now, that we've got the rules down, let the competition begin! Of course, prizes will be given to our top players. Who's going to be the Bunco Queen this month?
I am also looking forward to our guest chef, Hank Williams St. Patrick's Day dinner.
      Birthday Celebrations:
      Joanne Pierson, March 22
Some famous people who were bom on March 22 include Marcel Marceau (French mime artist), Andrew Lloyd Webber (English composer) and James Patterson (Author).
For those ladies who were unable to attend February's meeting please let me know when it is your birthday so that it will be included in the Trestleboard.
Also don't forget, April's Stated Meeting is the Centerpiece Competition. If there are too many centerpieces for the number of tables out, they will be used as decorations on the bar counter and around the lodge. Everyone is encouraged to enter and prizes will be awarded. Your centerpiece can be edible, non-edible, etc. Use your imagination. Also try to keep the cost of the centerpiece to under $7.00.

Laurie, The Worshipful Master’s Lady

TAX RATES

"It is paradoxical truth that tax rates are too high and tax revenues are too low and the soundest way to raise the revenues in the long run is to cut the rates now. Cutting taxes now is not to incur a budget deficit, but to achieve the more prosperous, expanding economy which can bring a budget surplus."

      Brethren and Ladies,
On behalf of Bethel 97,1 thank Worshipful Canterbury, for supporting our Bethel with his attendance. February was a great month for Bethel 97. We initiated three new daughters and the Pay-A-Plate dinner was attended by one of our biggest crowds yet.
Bethel 97 as well as all the Masonic youth groups owe a great deal of there success to the support they receive from strong adult leadership. You truly make a difference by supporting the youth groups fund raisers and attending their meetings.
We hope to see you at the March Pay-A-Plate on Friday, March 7th at 6:00 PM.
      Fraternally, and Thank you,
Jeff Yates, Promoter of Fraternal Relations
