From the East
Brethren & Ladies,
We have just completed another busy month. I congratulate and welcome to Burbank Lodge Brothers Jeffrey Couch, Paulyn Santiago, and Alex McArthur as our newest Entered Apprentices.
My heartiest congratulations also to Brother Daniel Maher, our newest Master Mason. This was a long journey for you Daniel, and I hope you found it worth the wait!
Our first co-event with Magnolia Park Lodge, “A Day at the Races”, was an over-whelming success. Thank you Worshipful Brother Johnstone and our own Brother Jeff Yates for making this happen. I look forward to more co-events with Magnolia Park in the near future.
April is another busy month for our Lodge. Sunday, April 13th, is the Grand Master's Breakfast at the Sportsman's Lodge. We have purchased a table for this event. If you would like to attend, please contact Worshipful Norm Furman for a ticket.
Monday, April 14th, is Burbank Public Schools Night at the Lodge. The event begins at 6:30 PM, and three Burbank Teachers will be honored with a Teacher of the Year award from their respective schools. I highly encourage everyone to attend and show support for these outstanding teachers and the Burbank Unified School District.
On April 18th, 19th, and 20th, our Junior and Senior Warden will be attending the Junior Warden's retreat in Ontario, California. The weekend was a very informative one when I attended as Junior Warden and I hope our Wardens get as much out of it as I did and more.
On Thursday, April 24th, there will be a Master Mason Degree.
On Saturday, April 26th is Burbank on Parade. Following the parade there will be a BarBQue at George Izay Park at the end of the parade. If you are interested in participating in the parade, please contact Brother Steve Harris, Burbank Shrine Club President, or Worshipful Norm Furman, Secretary, for details. Dress will be Lodge shirts and Khaki/Docker pants.
As I stated in my last month's article, our membership in the Burbank Lodge is growing. Last month we took a new petition for membership, and this month we will be taking one or two more petitions. A special thanks to all of the officers for their hard work and their dedication to our Fraternity.
I thank everyone for making dinner reservations. This has been a great help to our Junior Warden, Andy DeCaro, for preparing the meals.
Fraternally,
Marc S. Canterbury,
Worshipful Master

Brethren!
On April 27th I will have the pleasure of presenting the Child ID program at Johnny Carson Park. This rather large event showcases venders and service clubs from around the area. I have, so far, received many kind offers of assistance. If there is anyone who is interested in joining me for this fun public service, give me a call or see me at Lodge.
I cordially invite and welcome the Jobs Daughters, DeMolay, Eastern Star, all other concordant bodies and the Brethren of Magnolia Park 618 to the join the Brethren of Burbank Lodge. The Child ID Service requires personal contact with the general public. For this reason, it can be a valuable tool for the Masonic family to meet people "one on one" and in the most friendly manner possible, by promote their originations.
The Child ID Program is not only an important service for parents and their young children, but is a great showcase for Free Masonry at work.
Last month Rita and I had the pleasure of visiting the Midnight Mission in Los Angles. Program Manager, Brother Don Halfenberg took time from his busy schedule to give us a tour of this amazing facility. The first thing we noticed upon entering the building was that it is clean and organized. In fact, it is a very uplifting and bright environment.
The staff, many of whom are Masons, is knowledgeable and accommodating; The clients are far from intimidating. These men are exceedingly polite and focused.
Rita and I were impressed by the variety of services the Mission has to offer. An on site school, a full service athletic center, a state of the art kitchen and dinning hall, just to name a few. Also, on the top of the building is an extensive dormitory for the more advanced clients preparing for independence. Our visit concluded with a meeting with Mai Lee, Volunteer Program Manager, who arranged a date for us to stage the Child ID Service at the Mission in December.
I again thank Brother Don Halfenberg and the rest of the staff at the Midnight Mission for the enlightening day.
Brethren, I plan to volunteer my services at the Mission in the near future, perhaps serving meals.
If anyone is interested in joining me, let's talk!
Fraternally,
Jeffrey W. Yates,
Senior Warden

Acts 2:38
Take up your shield of faith and your sword, which is the Word of God. Ephesians 6:16-17.
An elderly Eastern Star woman had just returned to her home from an evening of church services when she was startled by an intruder. She caught the burglar robbing her home of its valuables and she yelled, "STOP! Acts 2:38!" ("Repent and be baptized, in the name of Jesus Christ so that your sins may be forgiven "). The: burglar stopped in his tracks. The woman calmly called the police and explained what she had done.
As the officer cuffed the man to take him in, he asked the burglar, "Why did you just stand there? All the woman did was yell a Scripture to you."
"Scripture? " replied the burglar. "She said she had an Ax and Two 38's!

Lines from Laurie
Hello Ladies,
I cannot believe the first quarter of 2008 is over. For those of you who were unable to attend A Day at the Races, co-event with Magnolia Park, it was a lot of fun. I look forward to more co-events with them in the future.
I congratulate our Bingo winners, Margaret Beddoe, Francine Lockett, Jean Williams. All of them were worthily crowned and dubbed Bingo Queens! Thanks also to Emily Maher, Shane Halfenberg, and Dillon Barnes for helping me with the Bingo call-outs and a very special thanks to Rosanna Maher for taking the pictures for this month's Trestleboard. You all did a great job!
Our ladies group topic this month will be health, as April is Health Awareness Month. Rita Yates is hosting the meeting and she has arranged for our guest speaker, Elaine Robak, RN, to speak about the Signs and Symptoms of Diabetes and nutrition. Handouts will be provided and a question and answer session will follow. Additionally, Rita will be doing blood pressure checks for those of you who wish to have your blood pressure checked.
This month's birthday celebrations:
Hazel Broussard April 6
Lesley Lundgren April 17
Lorrie Campbell April 25
Judy Barnes April 27
For those ladies who were unable to attend March's meeting please let me know when it is your birthday so that it will be included in the Trestleboard.
Laurie, The Worshipful Master’s Lady

Old Age, a Gift
I am now, probably for the first time in my life, the person I have always wanted to be. Oh, not my body! I sometime despair over my body, the wrinkles, the baggy eyes and the sagging butt. And often I am taken aback by that old person that lives in my mirror (who looks like my mother!), but I don't agonize over those things for long.
I would never trade my amazing friends, my wonderful life, my loving family for less gray hair or a flatter belly. As I've aged, I've become more kind to myself, and less critical of myself. I've become my own friend.
I don't chide myself for eating that extra cookie, or for not making my bed, or for buying that silly cement gecko that I didn't need, but looks so avante garde on my patio. I am entitled to a treat, to be messy, to be extravagant.
I have seen too many dear friends leave this world too soon; before they understood the great freedom that comes with aging. Whose business is it if I choose to read or play on the computer until 4 AM and sleep until noon?
I will dance with myself to those wonderful tunes of the 60 & 70's, and if I, at the same time, wish to weep over a lost love -I will.
I will walk the beach in a swim suit that is stretched over a bulging body, and will dive into the waves with abandon if I choose to, despite the pitying glances from the jet set. They, too, will get old.
I know I am sometimes forgetful. But there again, some of life is just as well forgotten. And I eventually remember the important things. Sure, over the years my heart has been broken. How can your heart not break when you lose a loved one, or when a child suffers, or even when somebody's beloved pet gets hit by a car? But broken hearts are what give us strength and understanding and compassion. A heart never broken is pristine and sterile and will never know the joy of being imperfect.
I am so blessed to have lived long enough to have my hair turning gray, and to have my youthful laughs be forever etched into deep grooves on my face. So many have never laughed, and so many have died before their hair could turn silver. As you get older, it is easier to be positive. You care less about what other people think. I don't question myself anymore. I've even earned the right to be wrong.
So, to answer your question, I like being old. It has set me free. I like the person I have become. I am not going to live forever, but while I am still here, I will not waste time lamenting what could have been, or worrying about what will be. And I shall eat dessert every single day (If I feel like it).
May our friendship never come apart especially when it's straight from the heart! May you always have a rainbow of smiles on your face and in your heart forever and ever!
Friends forever!
Fraternally, Rick Lake, Senior Deacon

Brethren and Ladies,
Watching a Bethel meeting recently, I couldn't help but think that these Daughters have little in common with their early 20th century counterparts. Gone are the days where a woman's sole purpose for attending college was to marry a doctor and spend the rest of her life, enhancing his. In this century, a girl attaches her self to someone else's wagon only if she wants to. Her options are now vast. The International Order of Jobs Daughters teaches already savvy girls to lead independent successful lives.
Remember, as you continue to support the Daughters of Job, you are not only supporting our children but the future pillars of our society.
Fraternally,
Jeff Yates, Promoter of Fraternal Relations
